96 rude 150 oceanpro spark problem

Took boat to the lake for first time this season. Idled fine. Put in gear and ran like crap. Got on plane and felt like trouble gettin gas. When I trimmed motor with toggle switch on throttle the motor kept wanting to cut out hesitate. Got it back to the house thought it might be bad gas hooked it up to tank with good gas same problem. Now it only starts with full throttle and as soon as I back off it dies. Checked spark, no spark in neutrel only wot. I was reading in the book something about a shift interrupter switch but I cant seem to locate it. Would the trim toggle have anything to do with the spark? Any ideas?

Sounds like problem is in the controller.
Is the engine new to you or did it run fine last year?
Shift interrupter is in the engine cowl on the shifter lever, but that only shuts down one bank, not all cyl's.
I would look at the neutral start safety switch in the controller.

The motor ran like a champ last year when I put it away. I did have problems with the neutral switch last summer but I bypassed it. When I first cranked it this summer it would idle fine. When I would give it some gas is when it didnt sound like it was running right. I figured I would take it out to the lake and run the crap out of it. The thing I am wondering is why when I would trim the motor the motor would skip like there was a short.

Maybe because there IS a short ?

Disconnect the main harness plug and see if it still does it,
if yes then the problem is in the controller,
if no then the problem is under the cowl.


I suspect those halfway repairs you did last year are comin home to roost.
You said you by-passed the neutral switch, is that the one in the controller?
Thats where I'd be looking if so.
Or get a used controller off craigslist if yours is worn out.

Okay, finally got the PRV adaptor in the mail. Did the power coil output and resistance test, charge coil output and resistance test and everything tested within or above range. I did the powerpack test and got no volt reading. I do not have a pl-88 load adaptor. Does that make a difference? I just ran a wire in place of the load adaptor. Is there another way of doing this?

I don't see anything in your posts that would require testing Peak readings, the problem still looks to be the neutral safety switch in the shifter.

I bypassed the neutral safety switch. I did that last summer when it wouldnt start. It was like that all last summer and didnt have any issues. I unpluged the engine wiring harness on the power pack and turned it over with no spark. Dosent that eliminate the key switch, lanyard and neutral switch?

Not unless you unplugged the main black harness plug and jump started it at the solenoid. Choke it by hand over the carbs to stop it if it starts up.

Follow the harness on the engine, on mine its under the engine hood,

its a big plastic/rubber plug, work the 2 halves apart if its stuck. Sometimes the prongs in the plug get varnished up a bit of CRC elec spray cleaner from napa will clean the internal contacts.
Apply dialectric grease before plugging it back up again, that will keep moisture and tarnish out.

If you still get no spark with controller disconnected, re-connect it .
Check fuse in rubber holder above the starter next to the harness connector

Check for 12v on the yellow wire with red stripe going to the powerpack when cranking engine only, its to ensure PP gets a full 12v when starter is cranking. Once engine fires there should be no v on that wire.

I checked that yellow wire the other day and I was only getting 9v. But my battery was getting run down. I need to put it back on a charge. I'll check out that harness tommorrow. Thanks
