96 Yamaha 250 overheating

The other day I was approaching a sand bar, tilted the motor up a bit and swerved to avoid it then tilted the motor back down and continued on. A few miles later, the alarm went off. I turned off the motor and tuned it right back on and no alarm. When I started to accelerate, the alarm went off again. Turned it off and on again and no alarm. Continued at 5mph for about 5 minutes and then accelerated. Ran fine for about a mile or two and then the alarm went off again. Continued repeating this drill to get home. Any ideas? Maybe I picked up some sand? I flushed the motor with fresh water for ten minutes and have yet to see if that worked.

Pressure relief valve or poppet valve....

Take a look at the pics..

Most likely your problem, You might also change the water pump out also with all that sand going through the impeller/housing it would be good to know it is not damaged..

Even though I have knowledge of poppet valve operation, It is amazing what you can find on the web.... I didn't take these pics... So I can't take credit for them..d
