Haven't owned a OMC V4, but have been told by mechanics that it was a problem. Did a search for the topic now and found that others had this problem to :
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=001085#000000

It's teeth's missing in gears because of a manufacturing defect on hardening pinion gears. Just wander if anybody know if the 97/98 Evinrude 130hp is affected.
I have never heard of lower unit problems with the V4s other than those with electric shift (& I had one of those). I have has a 75, a 100, a 140 & 2 110s & never a lower unit problem. Unverified rumors only cause problems.
