97 Johnson 175 Ocean Runner Stalling

I recently purchased a new CC boat with a 97 Johnson 175 Ocean Runner. It stalls when idling. It runs fine when warming up, but after I run offshore or come into trailer the boat, the engine will sputter a little and stall. Any advice? Does this sound like a carb problem?

Another issue, that may be related, is that as we were running offshore, the temperature alarm/check engine lights went off. The temperature gauge was showing the temp to be right at the cold side of the gauge. The pee stream was mildly warm, but not as warm or hot as I expected to see, but strong. We had been running at about 5000 rpms for 15+ minutes in about 56 degree water. I dont know a lot about the cooling aspects of outboards, but was concerned that the cool water was not circulating properly and relaying a false "cold" signal to the temp guage? Any ideas on this one?

you may not have a thermostat in the motor, some one may have removed it. motor should run 140-160 degrees F.

dirty low speed jets in carb, of idle speed just set too low.

Mike, That motor has a thermostat and temp (hot) sensor in each cylinder head. The overheat alarm would not come on if the motor was too cold. Those motors have 20+ PSI water pressure if the waterpump is good, and you are cruising. As TD said, running temp s/b about 140*F. Also, overheat alarm would trigger the S.L.O.W. system which will kill spark to one bank of cylinders. The telltale may not accurately tell engine temp. Put your hand on the cylinder head. if you can hold it there for at least 5 seconds, temp is OK. If you can hold it there forever, motor is running cold.

Check engine alarm is a restriction in the fuel supply. It is detected by a vacuum sensor.

If Check engine alarms, it pays to check, clean or eliminate the antisiphon valve in the fuel tank pickup.

Thanks guys. Two more questions. 1) I understand what could make the engine run hot, if the water pump wasnt moving water, but what would would make it run cold?- A thermostat allowing too much cool water through?

2) I think I might have dirty carbs due to old gas. The boat was out of the water for about 6 months before purchase. I saw the link to basic carb cleaning. How do I adjust the idle speed?
