Hi, I'm working on a jet boat (97 Bayliner Jazz) for a friend and am having a little bit of a problem with it. The reported problem was a after a little run, it started to miss and sounded like it was missing. When this problem happened there seemed to be more smoke than usual. Today when i got it i hooked up the hose and fired it up. It was running pretty rough with a hunting idle between 1400-2200 rpm. The tach needle was never in the same spot, always moving. Checked plugs and plug wires, everything was good there. Pulled the carbs off to see if there was any junk or water in the bowls. There was none. While they were off i cleaned them with carb cleaner and compressed air. Put them on and fired it up again. This time the idle wasn't hunting much at all and was holding pretty steady between 1800-2000. Put the air box back on and started it again and then the rpms were up to 2300. Everything i can think of would tell me there is a good sized vacuum leak somewhere. Sprayed carb cleaner around the intake and carbs and noticed no change in engine speed. If i manually move the timing to get it down to 1000 rpms it will idle fine but it's very doggy when revved. I know this retards the timing and isn't the way to correct the problem. Also, the factory oil injection system has been removed and it using an aftermarket system instead. If anyone has any tip or suggestions on what to check or look for i'd be really appreciative.
Thanks,
Jeramie
