Re: '97 V6 135 Merc too much oil in top carbie

Righto- fuel pump kit finally arrived today. The dealer supplied me the kit with part no 21-857005A 1. This differs form the one sugested by achris whom said I needed 21-42990A10. I've searched around the web and I think I may have been supplied the incorrect kit. The engine is a 135HP 1997 V6 Carb serial no 0G469384. Before I open the kit, can anybody please confirm this is the correct or incorrect kit?
Also, after running the engine for a few minutes, when I remove the cap off the main oil bottle, I can hear a release of pressure, like air rushing in. This would probably mean the check valve needs to be replaced yeah? I might as well do the fuel pump while I'm at it.

After about 5 minutes, the pressure should be gone. It will have about 2 lbs pressure on it while it's running and shortly after.

If it doesn't bleed off in a reasonable time, replace the check valve to the crankcase, low starboard side near front.

The other valve should allow free flow of oil, but if the supply gets pinched off allows atmosphere to enter after the suction gets to about 2 lbs. That is so that a restricted line or disconnect at the boat tank will not prevent the oil pump from withdrawing the reserve oil from the engine tank.

The different fuel pumps differ widely in appearence. If the kit parts look like they might fit, it's the right one.

hope it helps

You most likely need to replace the two check valves in the oil injection system, as a start.

There are three check valves on the oil injection system. For clarification, I was referring to the crankcase check valve and the check valve that is located between the oil pump and the fuel pump (#6 on the diagram). As correctly pointed out in the previous post, the third check valve located between the remote tank and the reservoir tank (#5 on the diagram) would not be a possible cause and there is no likely benefit to replacing that valve.

If its not the crankcase pressure valve I would be very surprised I went through this a 2 years ago -- I the pressure is still in the system after 10 min bleed down time change the crankcase pressure valve. I if you lookup old posts by me there should be a part number for the valve as well about $10 if I recall.

»UPDATE ** UPDATE I found what the problem was on my rig now you can check yours

The reserve tank has been holding pressure for weeks at a time. I didn't think anything of this as it has done this from day 1. I found that this is NOT normal. The valve that comes from the engine and supplies the pressure to the remote tank is supposed to bleed off the pressure after 5-10 min. When I checked the valve there was no bleed off occurring. Purchased a new valve and it bleed off as described. So after changing the pressure check valve I have cured the problem.

Check Valve number 21-878105 1

Just a note letting you know the outcome.
