Re: !976 22' Fiberform

Happy to report all came apart easy the Synthetic lube did its job. Very happy with transom progress. I'm contemplating putting a shower in the head, while I have the easy access in the back end. . Anyone out there done it before and have any advice on installation of the drain and waterproofing the walls floor ect.?/

Filleting the transom today. Get that done and I can make my mounts and stringers and then sand all the old encapsulating and tabbing glass for them that looks like it was slapped on in a hurry. Will be be sanding down to the hull to get to good glass before I reinstall mine.

Some more filleting the transom and then starting to cut up stringers and engine mounts today. Woot woot. Finally starting to look like something other than a drive by boat haters chain saw massacre.
The wife also asked if I wouldn't mind moving the boat out of the driveway to the other side of the house:grumpy:. Long walk for tools then. Must mean her patience is running out.

be3c8cea-cfb0-4242-9584-c8896707dacf.jpgI have to repair the old keyhole and a few old service wire and hose holes in the transom and then cut a new keyhole which will bring me to having to paint the outside of the transom only. Has a gelcoat finish on it now, can any of the painters out there clue me in on prepping it for a roll on gelcoat finish? Thanks.

Hello out there. GT you have answered a few questions here's another for you or anyone else. You've told me about tapering to repair the old keyhole before I cut a new one, the repair to be roughly 4.5 inches around the old hole. Do I go under the bottom of the boat to get 4.5 away from the bottom of the hole? Or just repair to the bottom? There is only about 2inches of old outer transom below the hole.

I am still hoping for a few paint pointers. I have to sand and repaint the transom with gelcoat. Do I sand to a smooth finish and roll it on? (The outer transom only)

I think you can just take the repair as far as the bottom edge of the transom...unless there is damage to the underside of the hull...you should be good to go...:)

I'll leave the gel coat queries to the guys who know best...

Will the new key hold be Higher up from the bottom of the hull than the old one? What's the approximate distance from the bottom of the existing keyhole to the bottom of the hull right now? How thick is the existing Transom skin?

As far as prepping for Gelcoat all that's required is a sanded smooth surface that's wiped down with Acetone. Since you're using Poly you'll be ready to go. You will use surfacing wax in the final layer of the Gel or spray it with PVA to get the final NonTack cured surface but that's about it. 4 Heavy rolled on coats and you'll be ready to start sanding and polishing.

My transom cutout stencil should show up this week so will be able to tell you the distance from the bottom of the boat to the bottom of the keyhole then. The transom is 1/8th "

Re: !976 22' Fiberform

Getting geared up for some more spring work on my money pit. I'm looking at my inboard setup and older outdrive and contemplating a jack plate and a 175hp type outboard instead. any one got any advise or pics. Ideas for beefing up the transom and stringers??

The only reinforcement i would be looking at is adding kneeboards from the stringers to the transom. The Transom should be strong enough at that thickness. If you add the kneeboards that just adds more of a tie in to the Stringers and provides more support and less flex.

Going with my 350 chev inboard. Pulled the money pit into my driveway to start the new springs work. Go back to work in 5 days but by then hope to have the engine beds in and the fiberglass matting done, by then. Looked in on it today and seeing a end in sight
