'98 25hp 3-cyl Tilt/Trim operation?

I just bought a '98 Princecraft aluminum boat complete with a Johnson 3-cyl 25hp motor, all in apparently excellent condition but I have a question about how the tilt/trim is supposed to work.

It's a Q model, and has the up/down buttons on both the engine and the control handle. There is no trim gauge on the panel though.

When tilting up, the trim motor will continue to run with no change in tone even though the engine is fully up. You'd need to be looking at the motor to know when to stop.

When trimming down, the trim motor will change to a "struggling" type tone once the motor is fully down and it's difficult to tell if the bow is fully down whilst underway. There is no automatic stop.

There is a gadget with three wires that looks like it might be a sender on the port side of the transom bracket but my question is, shouldn't there be an automatic stop either end of the trim movement?

Anyone?

I just need to know if there's supposed to be a limit switch on the tilt pump.

Someone else familiar with later model engines will have answer the question; I can tell you thatmy 87 150 Johnson has no limit swicth for up or down. You should have a trim indicator guage which is just above the trim motor. This does not limit anything, just indicates the trim level of the engine on the panel guage. If I have a relay sticking either up or down I have to take the cover off and disconnect the blue and green wires at the rear of the engine. Someone else should be able to answer your question better.

There is no T/T limit switch on that mtr as in some of the bigger hp mtrs for up position. It sounds like it is already wired for a t/t gauge. You'll have to go to a BRP dealer and check into a gauge and wiring harness for it. I personally don't use a t/t gauge when under way or any time. I figure that's why God gave me ears. Not to be a smart A??.

I'm lazy too. By using my ears I don't even have to turn around.

Well thanks a lot. Maybe I'm half blind and half deaf but never mind. You guys had a bad day?

The Mercruiser I/O on my other boat will automatically stop at each end of the trim travel. I just wanted to be sure I'm not going to burn out the tilt pump motor without an automatic stop.

Your Mercrusier has switches on the outdrive to control this which the 25 hp doesn't. T/T systems on outboards for years never had any kind of switches to shut them off when they reached their limits. It was taken care of by bypass valves in the unit itself.
