Another test you can try in the driveway with a hose and muffs is to heat the powerpack up with a hair drier and watch your spark tester to see if you loose good, strong spark. If ya do, replace the powerpack.

c/6

Hooty

Re: 98 Evinrude 115spl has intemittent WOT power problems

installed new power pak last night. boat jumped out of the water. very responsive. i will be satisifed afer a couple more successful runs before i will absoulty say that was it but it seems to be the culprit. upon a more careful examination of the old power pack the rubber insulation on one wire was toatlly gone and the wire was exposed & somewhat frayed to the point being cut into. well good luck and if things go bad again i wuill let u know. but it looks like at least that problem is solved. good luck

Re: 98 Evinrude 115spl has intemittent WOT power problems

***UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE***

Ok, I took the boat out today and really started messing with the plugs and wires. I tried taking each wire off individually and running the engine to try to notice change. This is what I found-
If I took one of the wires off either plug on the left side (if facing back of engine), I would start it and it would idle somewhat rough but run very similar to my problem at top end.
Now... if I took a wire off either plug on the RIGHT side, then engine would quit if I gave it any gass.
So, assuming the engine has two power packs- one for the left and one for the right, I would say I've found my culprit.

Can anyone validate or verify this for me?

THANK YOU

Yes there are seperate packs for the left and right banks. Before you purchase a new one switch the packs from side to side. If the problem moves it is the power pack. If it stays you have a bad stator.

Ok, now I'm a bit confused. Just called one place about getting a new power pack and was told there is only one power pack on this motor?!
98 Evinrude 115 SPL V4

Does anyone know for sure if there are two power packs on this engine or just one? (I'm hoping you are right BK or this is totally gonna throw me off).

I do not know about the power packs but I had the same problem (different motor) and it turned out to be a broken wire making intermittent contact (hence the problem cleared up when you hit a wave and shook the boat up a bit). Lightly tug on any wires going to your coils or power packs to see if they are broken and just not completely apart yet. ;)

I may be wrong about seperate packs for your year. I know they were seperate for the early 90's.

Chad, your motor has one power pack. Trace the small plug leads from the coils to the rectangular box. That is your power pack.

Chad this is the the crabahalic here. i took the boat out 2nd time now and runs perfectly no sign of the earlier problem. so it seems to have been the power pack. try the power pack solution.
Good luck

Re: 98 Evinrude 115spl has intemittent WOT power problems

Yet another UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE.

Much to my dismay, it was not the power pack. Bought the new one this morning and installed it. The engine started faster thann it ever had before. But that was the only benefit. Ran it out and made no more power than before.
This time I ot real persistent with the "push the key in" trick. After about 15 to 20 seconds of continuously pushing the key in and out, the engine came to life briefly. I was able to do this several mroe times. Looks like it is my carbs afterall. The good part is, unbelievably, I was able to convince the parts shop to take back the power pack and give me a full refund.

So now I'm pretty **** sure its the carbs (heard that before havent you). I really do not think it is a job I can do myself so if anyone can give me an estimate for what it would cost to clean the carbs, I'd appreciate it. The symptoms I'm having seem pretty indicative of a piece of debris floating in the bowl and getting in the way of the high speed jet. If you remember I mentioned the problem sometimes is related to the planing angle of the boat and will sometimes go away after I hit a big wave. The key trick seems to seal the deal though. Oh, and today, even with a new power pack on a completely stone cold engine, the problem was there (so it isnt heat related as I had thought).

I promise to update everyone as soon as I learn anything more. Hopefully, this will be a helpful thread for the archives.

Thanks so much for everyones input. Glad to hear your back up and running Crabahalic!!

Re: 98 Evinrude 115spl has intemittent WOT power problems

Anyone have a basic diagram or description of what my carbs actually look like or where they are located? People seem to be saying that its not too difficult to access the jets and bowls for a real basic cleaning or to remove a piece of debris. But I'm clueless about carbs at this point.
Thanks

Chad, The Clymer Outboard Shop Manual has a diagram of your carburators on page 338. I have the 1994 OMC turbo jet engine in my Whaler. I am having very similar problems to yours. I have ordered the power pack and will install to see if that solves my problem. If not, then I will do the carburators. The kits are less than $20 each. Let us know if a carb rebuild, clean and syncro. works for you. Oh! Rather than buy the manual I checked mine out from our public library.
