hello, bought my daughter a 98 grand cherokee larado. car looked good all around, it was burried on the lot, and was 40 mile from home, dealer was professional, gave a 30day warranty and a PENN INS warranty for 6months and 75k miles. seemed good,
So i take it to my local jeep dealer and they do a check over and tell me 1 needs new brakes all around, not the end of the world lining and rotors all around 140. the bad news was the front axle, need replacement. dealer cost 940, insurance/warranty payment maybe 700. if they approve after ive committed to the repair. law suit later i suppose.
question is whats in repairing a front end diferential, junk unit worth the effort.cost.
quick help appreciated, will need to move on this. thanks

What did they say they found wrong with it???

What transfer case is it equiped with and did you notice anything wrong with the front axle or differential???

A ring and pinion gear set should be 300 max, bearing set 100, shim pack 35, axles w/cv joints not more that 150 each and about 4 - 6 hours to do the job. These are canadian dlrs so you should get by with much less. I've bought all these parts in the last 4 months for doing the diffs in a 94 mustang, a 92 cougar and the front axles with cv joints in my 96JGC so the prices should be pretty close.

Don't see why the diff would be trashed and you had no idea bout it.

JD

hi, they didnt break it down, they inspected the oil and found metalic, it ride noisy, but ok,and even in two mode it seems engaged. the mpg is only 13.5 at best, while my allwheel drive grand k does 18-19,, i suspect the dealer may be high balling me also, and the insurer isnt really wrong to protect his intrest. just the dealer is not living up to his word.

Do you have the full time 4wd quadratrac or the part time selectrac?

i suspect that i will have the dealer break it down as the insurer demands and replace the parts needed instead of a wholesale repair as the dealer is demanding. my part if the dealer doesit is 27.5o per hour labor and the supplies for the job, the dealer estimated that my participation is about 275. and maybe the insurer will nail that down to a resonable figured too, then ill go after the dealer that sold me the car if its worth it

the repair dealer reports it needs new differential, and now we wait for insurer to authorize.
the repairer reports that they replaeced the front rotors as part of a recall!
if you got one of the 98s, you may want to check it out.

Well picked up the jeep today, and the insurer is now sending a adjuster to inspect the car, they expect it to sit, torn down at the shop so they can inspect and decide what they're going to cover. Nah,
So I ask them to schedule their inspection, I had the car fixed, and told the seller I expect relief on the axle fix. If I must proceed legally I would be also looking for the front and rear brakes rotor and tires under the assumed warranty of useability, ie motor vehicle inspection. Which it could not have passed?
Normally I expect to do brakes all around on a new acquiresition and maybe a light or so, but not an axle.
I made the initial deposit on a credit card so if he fails to respond reasonably he may have to sue me for 500 bucks.
The dealer is stiffing the insurer or perhaps that’s how that business works anyway, the insurer is at least going to spend 50 buck for the inspection. Even if I don’t comply.

it sounds like when you goto the doctor and they ask if you have insurance you say yes price goes up and they look harder for something wrong  it covers having to do more paperwork and wait for their money.

Good Luck, Once you drive the car off the lot its' your baby. The fight you seek will be with the warranty company. Cherokees are known for alot off electrical problems and others. The only jeep worth anything is a Wrangler. I reccomend selling the car and buying an Explorer.

warranty company is denying the claim, as expected, they determined that the repair was completed prior to thier inspection, darn secretary at the repair shop, but they would have weasled out based on my two days of ownership as being preexisting anyway, which in anticipation i bit the bullet and proceeded. the seller is addressing my complaints and is in posession of the car now and i conveyed that i am expecting some of a rebate on the selling price.

tehe, i had two91 explorers, nice, but they had syncronized component failures. compressor, starters, runaway accelleration that could only be stopped by standing on the brake and turnning off the engine. i sold them both when the tranies failed and my daughters got thier licenses. a young driver was killed by i suspect a runaway and a tree. i'm not looking back.
