I just purchased this engine and am wondering if there any "weak links" other than a tendency to plug up the tell tale. My research has turned up very little. I'll fess up to being a JohnyRude guy so I admittedly know little about Mercs other than having to wrench on my fishing partners 50. I have thick skin -- be honest and lay it on me folks.

Re: 98 Merc 75HP

I got a 1996 75 from my buddy this spring and he has fished that motor hard!!! He fishes 3-4 days a week rain or shine and has done so since the boat was new. The only problems he ever had was with the lower unit, but I'm pretty sure that is from stainless prop vs. big rocks. I sucks down the gas pretty good but it always starts always trolls and always gets me home.

Thanks bluewater. I agree that rocks & props are not good for lower unit longevity. As for fuel economy, even my trusty 40 HP Evinrude sucks fuel if you get after it. Take the last number off the horsepower rating and that's about how much fuel you'll burn at wide open throttle with most carbed two-stroke engines.
