I am trying to winterize my boat for the first time and I went to a friends house to see how it was down. It was so simple I decided to do it myself.

I bought some ear muffs from West Marine and I hooked up the garden hoze. I ran the engine until it got warmed up. I assume 150 is warmed up. Then I disconnected the hose and ran a piece of hose into a cooler filled with 4 gallons of -100 antifreeze from West Marine. The engine never started sucking up the coolant and out of fear of over heating the engine I shut the engine down when temps got to 170-180.

Now I never had any problems overheating in the summer so I assume the water pump worked fine. So is my thermostat not opening at these temps 170-180 or could it be something else. Do I need to go to west marine and get the container that would run the coolant down thru the ear muffs via gravity?

Thanks.

There are some other methods for winterizing.Check up in the adults section.
The pump dosent actually "suck water", so you may have fried the impeller already. The pump would have to been fed with a gravity feed.
But since we dont know if the therm opened up to allow the A/F into the block.ARE YOU SURE YOU WONT CRACK THE BLOCK?

Now that you have had a friend show you how to do it wrong, go up to the DIY sticky and read how to do it right. There are NO shortcuts when winterizing. Do it properly and your wallet will still be on speaking terms with you in the spring.

Save yourself the hastle. The first and only time I drew anti freeze up through the outdive the following sping I eneded up with a cracked intake manifold. take my advise and research this process and give yourself some piece of mind. find the block drain plugs and remove the therm housing and water pump hoses and fill the block up with A/F untill it pours out the out drive and each individual drain plug to it's level replace plugs lowest to highest up to the therm housing after blowing all the water out with compressed air work's every time but some will argu that you don't need A/F but for me it give's me piece of mind knowing there is something in the block not allowing rust and or corrosion

If you don't follow the advise of the 3 previous replies, we will see you in the spring about replacing a cracked block.
