I'm not sure if integrity is jeopardized or not. I can tell you quarter tap results seem sound.

How do you adjust the image size seen. I just copied the link to clip board from photobucket and used the insert image feature.

In photobucket, there's an IMG code for each pix. Looks like this:
IMG]http://i1246.photobucket.com/albums/other%20people%20boats%20or%20pix%20info/sunk.jpg[/IMG

Copy that IMG code, and paste it in your post window, it'll show up like this:

Think I got it.
Deepest area is .055" about 1/2 dime size at the turn upward. Can I use the fiberglass resin they sell at autozone? also matting should be cloth style or the strands?

Now ya got it.

Ugly, but certainly looks like the glass is sound from WV.

Great so what do you recommend next. Small local fiber glass build up in deep area or gel-coat application as is?

If you could lay a straight edge across it, how deep is the damage?

.055" and only at the top area 1/4" of the image shown in the thread. The rest measures about .025"

If you've ground it a little to get rid of loose fibers, get down to good glass, and it's less then a 1/16" deep (0.0625) I'd slightly over fill it w/ gelcoat only. Then when you sand it flush to the surrounding area & buff it out, it will hopefully be almost invisible.

The youtube video represents a very similar radius void to mine. Thanks for that. Well I certainly have learned a lot. As nice as boats can be will never be perfect. This one was close before found this. I will post my progress once it warms up.

I wouldn't hesitate to gel inside the bilge as long as you gan keep the area warm with a space heater.... that includes the glass, not just the air.... inside garage, heat lamp under the hull and heater inside n let er rip.

Kerosun heater and halogen lamps, my garage reached 84F this afternoon. The Polyester repair set up in a quick 10 minuets. Love it!

Time to grind. Am I anal or what?

SAND, NOT GRIND. Too aggressive too fast at this point will have you working in the wrong direction....

Even on much bigger repairs, the ability to lay up multiple layers all at once & the quick cure is a HUGE advantage. The gel should kick similarly, and you could do several layers to build mil thickness to just above the surrounding surface. Then when you sand it out, cut & buff it will hopefully be invisible.

Okay, I was going to use my 320 grit drum sander on a high speed. So you say hand sand? 220Grit?

320G is not what I think of when I think of a grinder, so yeah, a drum sander w/ 320 will probably do it & not over do it. You'll probably need to feather the gelcoat back a bit from the edge of the repair too.

I was thinking 220G on a soft random orbital pad, but the contour makes mechanical sanding tough. A drum sander might be just the right thing.

Looks like my repair(s) is a bit higher than the surrounding areas. Oops. Suggestions? When I go to gel-coat will the area look awkward even though .010" higher than the existing area?

Yes, it would be visible but depends on how noticeable it is and how much of a perfectionist you are you need to decide if you want to redo it.
If you decided to redo it, dish out the glass area. Re-glass and don’t apply resin or glass to the feathered edges of the surrounding gelcoat so you don’t create more sanding for yourself than necessary.

Re: 98 SeaRay 190BR - Engine out and noted voids

just grind it out till it's concave n fill it...... I wouldn't have glassed it in the first place... just filled with gel n sanded smooth

I'd hit it with a 40 grit flap disc on my cordless angle grinder... just lightly tickle it till I had about a 1/16-1/8" dish to fill....

remember gelcoat isn't paint, it goes on thicker than paint

Not afraid at all at this point to redo to see some resemblance of a nice boat I once had. I am having fun though... what else to do in the winter right?
