Our tale of woe: A few weeks ago my brother running 3/4 throttle, engine emits mechanical noise, stops. Won't turn over. We take the heads off and metal pours out from top cylenders. THen we notice the crankcase is cracked. Powerhead is toast! So my alternatives:
1. Get a rebuilt powerhead.
2. Find another used motor.
3. Bite the bullit and purchase a brand new motor for our 1996 23' Baystealth.

Local dealer offers a brand new 150 ProV (2005) for $8599 or new 4cycle for $10,599. He will take our old motor as trade in to cover cost of derigging/rigging new motor. Total cost of new motor will then be price quoted plus sales tax, title. So my questions to members of this forum are:
1. Are these reasonable prices for new motors?
2. Is rebuilding the engine with a rebuilt powerhead make sense (don't know what caused problem. Mechanic thinks carb became excessively lean).
3. Will engine instruments, etc. (tach, trim indicator) for the 98 ProV work with a new 4cycle?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am fully aware that I am going to have to pay some big bucks any way I go.

To be honest if the engine was in good shape (no corrison, good power tilt, trim, everything else worked fine, motor looks good, ect) I would throw a new power head on it and be done with it. It will be cheaper and you will have a virtually new engine, minus the electronics. Buying a brand new 150 horse is big bucks....

A good remanned powerhead will be a lot cheaper, however you do not want to bolt it on until the original cause of the problem is determined and corrected. If the problem is in the fuel system, even a whole new motor may not survive being hooked back up to the same problem.

I am with Ray
busteted pistons and tossed rods are a symptom not the problem
ya had other issues going on.
from lack of correct storage maint to lack of correct preventative maint.

I have been doing this stupid yet well paying gig about 30 years now.
in that time I have actually seen 2 motors, both 70 johnsons, wear out.
the rest died a tortuous death of customer neglect.

over the years I have actually priced it, the difference between the cost of water pumps, oil filters, pressure control parts and such maint items actually stays the same regardless of pistons, cranks, boring and labor.

I appreciate the good advise. After much soul-searching my brother and I (co-owners) decided to repower with a new Yamaha 4-stroke. This will likely be as close as I ever get to new boat. I like the idea of the 6-year warranty and peace of mind with a new motor. Hopefully any future posts by me will be good news.

Congrats! I've been there, nothing beats the confidence of having a new engine behind you, makes you feel wonderful everytime you goto launch.
