I recently bought a very inexpensive 1981 Galaxy 18ft bowrider and trailer.
The guy selling it had spent around $2500 on a rebuilt alpha one outdrive, risers and
heat exchangers for the Merc 470 engine.
I was going to part it out but decided instead to
get it ready for the water.
My concern is that the hull is warped.I didn't notice this initially, thinking that it was just
loaded crooked on the trailer
The floor had been replaced and is solid as a rock, fiberglassed in and gelcoated.
No flex, no trampoline effect, no creaking.
I tried to torque the engine mounts and they are good and solid.
I'm thinking that the stringers were redone but it was not straight when he did it.
Looking from the stern the boat it straight to the wind shield and seems to twist
in the bow section. I'm thinking it may have been recapped badly ?
In this boat there are stringers above the deck level on the sides that I think are foam filled.
I dont know how structural these are. I say I think they are foam filled from looking at resto
posts for Galaxys. Where the floor was redone these were glassed over and are solid.
BUT on the left side of the boat it is cracked along pretty much it's entire length
where if meets the floor. I'm not 100% sure if its the glass or the gelcoat.
In the engine bay these foam filled stringers are definitely hollow and stop short of the transom.
I replaced the rams, worked on some electrics, added a water fuel separator and took her out on the lake
last weekend and the engine ran great, kept a steady temp. No sign of hull flexing. Got up on plane and
ran just fine for about 20 minutes. No scary sounds or such.
Any thoughts on the side "stringers" or the warped hull ?
Sorry for the re-post I had a message saying "working" and thought it had not posted first time around.
