First off why do you believe the tank is the culprit? Have you checked your fill hose? They go bad after awhile. Before you start tearing things apart analyze all of your options first.
There is a way to test your tank for leaks - do a quick search on the net. Basically no more than three pounds of air pressure for so much leak down time. Depends on volume, etc.
Start with all the simple stuff first before you decide to dig out the tank. It just might be right before your eyes.
If you decide the tank itself is the culprit then there are many options and thoughts on its removal. I cannot emphasize enough on your safety while doing anything around fuel. Probably a useless statement - but no sense in taking chances.

You will have to do some demolition to remove the tank (and some rebuilding after repairing or replacing the tank) so you'd better be sure the tank is really leaking.
