Just bought an ex Florida Fish and Wildlife boat w/twin 115's on it and did all the due diligence - mechanic checked engines and marine survey.
Unfortunately the mechanics inspection was done on lift and marine survey was done w/a sea trial that didn't allow the vessel to run for more than 10 minutes at cruise speed - sea trial was conducted on a river and surveyor only saw 4 wot runs which lasted a maximum of 2 minutes before back to idle zone.
The long and short of it is that the port engine overheated during (my) maiden voyage.
Symptoms:
- after approx 5 minutes at around 4800rpm overheat beeper sounded - hot light showed on tach - we immediately backed off and ran at idle for 2 minutes
- Ran it back up to 3000 rpm and repeated above
Contra-indications: (if this an appropriate term)
- pee stream still strong at idle and if in neutral engine would cool off
- engine would still cool at higher rpm's in neutral
Where we may have messed up:
- ran engine 3 times at cruise rpm to get on plane while trying to get home w/no warning buzzer but high temps indicated on temp gauge
- ran engine at lower rpm than its twin in effort to get home but did not let engine hit buzzer before giving up
- basically ran engine while it was overheating w/a mindful eye on temp gauge
Questions:
What is the problem?
Did we FUBAR the engine by running it after the initial warning buzzer?
After maiden oddyssey we trailered the vessel 10 minutes, flushed the engines and the port motor started first crank and pee-trail was still strong.
Any input welcome,
thanks, Rex
