It could be many things. You have to get the code pulled.just tonight, running great, can I assume this an 02 sensor display?

If it occurs without special effort, I'm sure there's a reference to it in the owner's manual.
It means the driver needs a root canal!!I could not resist!

Typically, owners manual tell you to take it into the dealer if the CEL is on. They never say anything about troubleshooting. Also 99 is an OBD2 vehicle. No flash codes.
Even though the CEL light goes out doesn't mean there isn' somehing wrong. You can pull the code after the CEL goes out. It gets logged. Could be something as easy as a misfire caused by a marginal spark plug. It is always a good idea to see what caused it.My 99 Tahoe CEL comes on.
I check all the fluids and air filter and nothing wrong there.
After a few days (14 or so)the CEL goes away.
Then in 14 days it comes back for no apparent reason.
Everything runs and sounds fine, no change in mileage or tail pipe stink either.
