Re: 99 Durango??

ive had a good bit of experience with the mopar trucks as well, and i can tell you from experience, the 5.7 hemi gets almost exactly the same mpg as a 4.7 in the same vehicle. particularly if you get a 4wd you are going to get about 15mpg with either engine.QUOTE]

While I can't speak for your personal experiences, I can tell you from the perspective of a professional Dodge technician that this is not the same as what is reported by 99.9% of our customers. Nor is it reflected in the av. mpg stickers in the new vehicle windows nor in the gas guzzler surcharge the hemi generates. But then again, I don't personally own a Dodge ( I think they are junk, sorry) so I can't really verify personally one way or the other.

I worked for years as a transmission overhaul guy and have to say that the trans in that is the weak link. It will survive better once an overhaul has been done, the aftermarket seals hold much better and you will need a super sized trans cooler. The rest of the truck isn't that bad, the interiors are typical mopar, having lots of ill fitting plastic which tends to fade and crack a bit sooner than the other two options, but overall the truck isn't all that bad. They aren't as refined as the Explorer or Blazer, but the price usually reflects that as well. Fuel mileage with either motor is pretty poor by todays standards but both the 5.2 and 5.9l motors are pretty solid. The newer Mercedes powered trucks run better, but repairs are a bit more costly when needed. The trans remained the same even in later years.
You would be just as well off economy wise though to own a full size truck, there is little fuel savings and the heavier trans is better for towing.

Re: 99 Durango??

if i remember right the mpg rating on the 4.7 and 5.7 is only 1mpg difference on the window sticker for city driving. i could be wrong...

a 2wd ram with the 5.7 can get 17-18mpg highway, i have seen it in more than one truck. the point really was that the more powerful engine will get as good or better mileage while towing a heavy load, because its not working so hard. i mean hell my v6 nissan only got 10mpg this one time when i towed 4500lbs with it. whereas my brothers 5.7 ram gets 13-14 towing a similar load. plus the horsepower is nice for everyday driving too.
