Hi, Just found this board and hope someone here can help...
I repowered my 1988 25' Grady with brand new twin Evinrudes in the spring of '99.

Here are the model and serial numbers if they can help you identify any potential inherent problems:

E 175 FPXEE 04644946
and
E 175 FCXEE 04650686

I was pleased with the engines up to the fall of 99, until after putting 100 hours on them and having the engines quit running due to spark plug fouling...I was then told by the dealer about the "design problem" that caused plugs to burn out after only 50 hours, and the dealer then installed the "enhancement retro fit".(under waranty)

Since the retrofit, I've had these ongoing intermittent problems with my port engine...

It sometimes will run up to 2000 rpm all by itself while at idle in neutral or while at minimum throttle in gear. When it does that, it also vibrates excessively, like it's not running on all cylinders.

Shutting down the engine and then restarting sometimes will "reset" it and it will run fine again, sometimes it won't and I'll have to restart it again several times.

Also, this same engine is consuming at least 2 times more oil than the starboard engine.

Using my flow-scan and refilling the oil tanks to determine oil usage, I calculated oil usage at 35 to 1 for the port engine, vs the starbord at 75 to 1 on a recent 80 mile run at mostly high RPM (4,000 and 30 MPH on flat calm seas)

It seems to run fine at high RPM without vibration, the problem is only noticeable at low RPM, and again it is intermittent. Sometimes it seems fine, and sometimes it runs like crap.

I've had my dealer (at my expense, since my 1999's are no longer covered by waranty) try to fix the problem but it hasn't yet been repaired.

So far, (at different times over the past 2 seasons) he's told me that I had a bad injector and replaced that, and that I had a bad throttle position sensor, and replaced that, and that there was a tear in the fuel pump diaphram and installed a fuel pump kit to "fix" it...

But I still have the problems and I'm tired of having my dealer replace "good"? parts and spending megabucks with no results.

Any ideas?
Is this a problem others have also seen?

Please advise.

Thanks!

obout the over oiling check to see if the oil return line is pinched or kinked this is the most comon cause of over oil on these motors as for the rpm problem i had one do this to me and it ended being the wires on the voltage regulator where loose

Thank you Frank.

The oil return lines seem ok, no kinks or leaks are visible.

Where is the voltage regulator located, and how do I check them?

Len
FinestKind

Remove the sender unit from the oil pump and install a 60# or higher gauge. The normal oil pressure is from 6-20#, most motors run 6-10#. The regulator is the red and white fitting just past the oil injector. If that is installed backwards, you will get high oil pressure. Check the orientation with the other motor.

Straighten out a paperclip and cut a 45 degree angle on it using wire cutters. Remove the oil cap and press the sharpened clip up thru the small hole in the center inside the cap. You will feel it "pop" thru the rubber tip. That will prevent hot oil from building up pressure in the tank while on a long run.
