I just installed a rebuilt 99 Johnson 225 looper on my boat. Engine runs well, but it seems that since the install I've had some electrical issues that weren't there before. I recently heard that OMC made "lousy" engine wiring harnesses during this time and a total re-wire of the motor side usually fixes this. I wanted to see what the collective wisdom thought of this. Wiring on this engine would appear to be original.

Thanks

Re: 99 Johnson 225 Engine Wiring

I got the above comment from a boat dealer (OMC rep). He indicated that this was a "bad time" for OMC and they made some shortcuts on a lot of their equipment. I'd say since I installed it, I've gone through two R/R's and after a ground issue (never had one before motor installed) I just recently started to get a short somewhere. I suppose it could be the common failings of old wire, but I thought I'd ask. The wire on the motor looks like it had a heat issue...does that make sense..like it was baked a little to hot, not melted just doesn't look right. Motor turns over and runs strong...I'm going to get a new engine side harness and just be safe and re-do the wire...is this a fairly straight forward job?

Thanks,
