Hi! I’m new to this forum but not to boats, anyways, I’ve got a 1999 Johnson 30 Hp that I’ve been having issues with. I had it running about 3 weeks ago on the water and it did just fine, there were a few times when it would bog down a little at full throttle. But didn’t leave me stranded or anything like that. I took it back out a few days ago and couldn’t get it to even start. I then cleaned the carbs (3 different times now by 3 different people) and it now will start and die quickly. But if I can get it started the second I touch the throttle it bogs down and shuts off and is a pain to get started again. I’ve got fresh fuel and now I have ordered another carburetor. Has anyone else ever had any experiences with something like this? It is getting good spark as well and it almost seems like it automatically floods itself every time I try to start it. Does anyone have any experience with something like this? Thanks!

general plan would be to check compression, then measure spark with an open-air adjustable tester (cheap).

Pulling the spark plug out and touching metal to see a blue spark everytime, does that sound about right to you?

Carburetor cleaned 3 times.-----Likely it is not a carburetor problem !

Set your spark tester to about a half inch (7/16"), and get a good ground for the tester. Crank with all plugs removed.

Measuring/testing ignition strength -- as opposed to plug condition or gap. I now keep an image of a tester handy:

That’s what I was thinking. But then again the guy I bought the boat from had rebuilt the carburetor before I bought. Taking it apart I noticed the jet coming to the bowl has a bend in it, that’s what is making me believe it may be the issue, but I could be wrong.

And I sure will! Definetly going to give it a test tommorrow and see what the outcome is! Thanks for all the responses!

There is a nozzle that sticks into the float bowl.-----And do not bend anything if you are not sure if it is the way it came from the factory !----The wee tube is offset when the build that carburetor.

For sure, that’s the one I noticed was bent, that does make sense. The one I ordered one that will be in today, I’m gonna slap it on this evening and then test the spark again with the tester and post an update.

That float is one one of the ones that can be installed upside down I believe...

Update: Well I just wanted to first off day thanks to everyone for the input and reaponses, it’s been a lot of help! Today I did a compression test and got 105 and about 103, I tested the spark and come to find out the lower cylinder would spark but wouldn’t even come close to sparking at 7/16. It would crank everytime so I believe my fuel issue is fixed, but would run very rough. I pulled the lower coil wire off of the spark plug with the motor running and then it ran very smoothly. I am guessing the coil pack would be the next culprit, does that sound about right to y’all?
