No reason for it on a yeoman duty daily driver, breaking a C-Clip is probably the least likely thing to fail in your uber-reliable rear axle.

C-Clip eliminators are used in drag racing applications to prevent a wheel/axle from coming off the car when an axle breaks under power. C clisp holds the axle shafts in.
To break an axle shaft like yours your going to need to be drag racing, launching at about 5500 rpms with 600 hp and dead hooking the rear tires.

Thanks Windsor - I read about this a ways back, just that a guy I work with has had 2 axle mishaps with his, course he has 267K on his same 4x4 Suburban...

I goofed!! I meant the lock bolt!!!! :)

"C-clip eliminators are really racing stuff that prevents the axle from coming out of the housing during extreme use. I don't think they will give any appreciable benefit in street/offroad use of a 10 bolt GM rear end.

The weak points in a 10 bolt tend to be the pinion gears (the ones inside the carrier, not the main pinion gear), carrier housing itself, and the pinion shaft lock bolt. In fact, the lock bolt should be replaced every once in a while as preventive maintenance, like when you change the rear end gear oil. They wear and move around, and eventually break. They can remain in place broken for a good long while, then finally the broken end slips out and you end up with total and immediate destruction of the differential. It's an extremely cheap part; pick one or two up at the dealer and just leave them in your parts stash so you'll have it on hand next time you change gear oil - no excuse to forget it that way.

And speaking of rear end gear oil, remember: if you have the G80 option on your truck, this is the Eaton Gov-Loc unit. It's not "posi" or "limited slip" and requires that you do NOT include an additive of that type to the gear oil. Using "posi" additive or anything like that can cause the locker to fail. Some people love to debate this one but if necessary I can post a GM service bulletin that states as much."
