After six months of planning and dreaming the day finally came, May 20 as we pulled out of the Falmouth, MA harbor and headed the 185 miles to NYC. It was a wet, windy and rainy day with 3-5 foot waves until we got well into Long Island Sound. But our boat and motors performed like champs! So did my wife.

That was the start of what has already been an amazing adventure. In the last three weeks we have boated past the Statue of Liberty and Wall Street, headed up the Hudson River under the George Washington Bridge, past West Point and Sleepy Hollow eventually past Albany and to the start of the Erie Canal. We then took the canal west, going past forests and farm land and through a couple of dozen locks over the next 5 days until we met the Oswego Canal near Syracuse, NY. We then headed north the 24 miles through 7 (I think) more locks to Lake Ontario. The next port after Oswego on Lake Ontario was Sackets Harbor at the east end of the Lake. Three days were spent there relaxing, meeting some very nice people and getting ready to move on.

The rough waters on our final day on Lake Ontario gave way to glassy calm and clear water in and around the Thousand Islands area that make up the headwaters of the St. Lawrence River. Running along the US and Canadian border, of the 1,800 islands in the area there seemed to be hundreds of islands that we saw, mostly very tiny islands, many with a house somehow built on each one. There were castles and sprawling lawns and boats of every shape and kind everywhere. Boating is the only way to travel in this wonderland-like place that stretches for 30 or 40 miles downstream. What a jewel of a place this is.

The next three days were filled with hurrying up and then waiting for several hours at each of 5 or 6 locks and then finally going through each lock when the freighters had all passed by first. Our next destination was the city of Montreal. We spend four days in that lovely city. What a gem.

Then on eastward on the mighty river. Our next destination was to be Quebec City, three days later. We will arrive there tomorrow and spend almost four days in what many people call the most beautiful city in Canada. We can't wait!

All of that in just three weeks. What's ahead? Well we have eight more weeks of this exhilarating and constant flow of one adventure and challenge after another before we will complete our circle route and arrive back at Cape Cod in early August. We will see whales...hundreds of them. We will be forced to dock in places with up to 40 foot tides, and we will continue to see amazingly beautiful scenery and meet friendly, kind people just like we have done during the first three weeks of this great trip.
