A Chevy?

I can't bring myself to get a Blazer. I have a '94 Silverado with 192K mi. and am spoiled. With no job, I'm trying to sell the truck and get another tow vehicle for the same dollars. If I can get around $4,000 for the truck, I can get a Jeep or Explorer with about 115K miles.<br /><br />I have heard stories of Jeep tranny problems.<br /><br />What's your experience?<br /><br />Thanks,<br /><br />BarryBob

What kind of Jeep are you talking about? The Grand Cherokees and Wranglers use Chrysler transmissions, so yeah, they have tranny problems. Cherokee's, however, do not. The AW4 automatic transmission is japanese made and one of the most reliable ever made. If it doesn't make it to 300,000 miles something is very wrong...

I can tell you from being a mechanic for 15 years that the smaller vehicles blazer jeeps and exploders(reason) that no matter what people say they are not set up for towing. they were made for soccer moms that don't like minivans. If I were you i would keep the pickup for towing and if you wanted something better on gas get a car. Remember they all make junk nowdays it just depends if you get a good one

I'm sorry, jimr, but being a mechanic doesn't really have anything to do with knowing about towing. It depends on the size of the trailer. Small things like cherokees and blazers will be fine up to about 4000lbs. My boat weighs about 2000lbs, and when I pull it with my cherokee I can't even tell it is there. My friend has also towed my boat with his blazer, same thing. I've heard explorers are even better, when they don't explode anyway...

If you are wanting to trade for fuel economy, don't bother. Unless you have a 454 in the Silverado, the economy isn't that much better in the smaller rigs. To compare, I own a 95 Ford F150 4x4 with 351 that gets on average 16 mpgs. I also have a 93 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 4.0 that averages 18 to 21 mpgs depending on how grandmotherly I drive it. Now, when towing, the Fords mpgs don't change, but the Jeep has dramatically lower economy towing the same load. In my opinion, if the truck is paid for, keep it. You are happy with it and it is a more useful vehicle. At least you aren't like the suckers who take a paid off rig and trade in on a brand new rig to get better economy, not realizing they now have a monthly payment and higher insurance. Pay hundreds of extra dollars a month to get a more few mpgs, I see it all the time.....

Not sure on your options but I wanted to mention that I own a F150 and my wife owns a Explorer (both 99). The explorer has less leg room and has a lot more cabin noise then the F150. Also by checking the blue book on both of these vehicles the F150 held its value a lot better
