A Couple of Simple Questions...

I am trying to rebuild my 74' Wellcraft and have a few questions about my engine. I am sure these subjects have been discussed however I cannot find them. I am hoping that someone with knowledge of my engine can help.I have a 75' Johnson 115, model number 115ESL75. I have bought the service manual and have not been able to get a definate answer. Here we go..

Where is the common ground on the engine, I need to ground my gas tanks? I think it is on the port side of the engine.

I have a replacement water pump kit, do I need to drain the lower unit oil before removing?

The engine has been sitting a while. We started the engine 2 years ago. A friend tested the compression and said it was good andlower unit oil was clean. Is there anything that I should look at before putting it in the water.

you should be able to use the regular ground inside the boat for the tank.. if you don't want to use it than just follow the wire from the negative side of the battery into the engine. mine is on the port side in the middle...

The Air Slots were, in some ways, very much ahead of the mainstream boat in their day. Very fun, smooth ride. What a great project to be able to set one up with todays prop technology. The gearcase of that era isn't the most efficient but it was what we had back then when that boat came out. Keep us posted with your progress.

Thanks for the input, Zach103, the link is for a change on a '85 Johnson, not a '75, will it make a difference?

Since I pretty much stripped the boat to the fiberglass and there was not much wiring to start with then where could I find a ground in the boat. I used to install stereo's in college and I am usually good at wiring things but this whole ground in a boat throws me.

Dhadley; thanks for the comment. I was very lucky to find a boat in this condition, with this much character. It is my first so I am really anxious to get it in the water. I have been working on and off for almost 2 years now. Almost there....

service the carbs ground to the batterys or a buss bar in the rear you do not have to drain the gearcase to change water pump but use lithium grease on the inside of the housing and a dab of silicone to hold the o ring in place when reinstalling the wp also make sure the motor is in rev to get to shift link under powerhead youll need 2 6" 1/4 drive extentions and a swivel and 5/16 sockett tape the swivel to prevent kick out
