A CRY FOR HELP - DeeJayCee/Rodbolt...ANYONE!

OK...I have been having fits with my motor all year. I'm ready to let it fall of the back of the boat! 1982 Suzuki DT85.

Here is the problem. I've replaced the entire fuel system, except the carbs. The motor runs fine with the muffs on it in the driveway. When I take it to the ramp, it starts fine and idles fine but as soon as I put it in gear, it dies. It is almost as if a switch is tripped to make it stop. I've had this boat out several times this year and not once has it given me a simple trip. In fact, it has been getting worse each time. I had new plugs in it today, so that was not the issue. Will the water pressure when it is in the water cause this problem to be more pronounced? Could it be a timing issue? I have yet to check that. Possible other issues? I'm greying fast...please provide any assistance you can. Thanks!!

I just ran the motor and noticed that the CDI Unit was VERY, VERY hot. Is this a sign that it is bad? I have no way of testing it and my manual says I need a special tester from Suzuki, which I don't have. Should it be this way? Perhaps this is my issue and is only noticeable when there is a load on the motor (in water).....thoughts??

Have you noticed that it "runs fine" without a load and dies when you put a load on it? It can do that running on 2 cylinders.

Have you confirmed that all 4 are making power? You can do that on the muffs by disabling spark plugs and noting the idle speed. If you disable a plug and the idle speed does not drop that is a dead cylinder.

Have you done the link 'n' synch per the manual? Did you set the idle with no load on the engine?

Let us know what you find.

I'm the one with the DT100 and have the same problem. I have mine at the Suzuki guy now - and will hopefully have an answer in a day or two. I'll update my post when I have news...

Bgbird...thanks. Good luck with your motor. I look forward to hearing what went on with yours. If you are like me, you must be at wits end. Depending on what the problem is, it may be the end of my boating life since it might be EXPENSIVE!!!!

Bgbird....I just noticed you'er in South Jersey. I'm not too far from you...who is the mechanic that you have looking at it? If he is reputable, I might use him. Let me know.

When you run it on muffs, does it go into gear and can you rev it up in gear, in forward and reverse? Or only in the water it will die in gear? Have you taken the prop off to see if all is the way it should be?

The motor engages in gear just fine with the muffs on in the driveway. It only dies while in the water. Everything appears normal and fine with the muffs, except the rpm are a bit hihg, which I guess is normal when out of the water. My tach died also, so I can't give you an exact reading, but it sounds fine both in and out of the water. From a prop standpoint, I think everything is fine based upon my check, but what should I be looking for? The CDI unit is too hot to touch. Is it supposed to be?

No the CDI must not get hot like that so there must be too much resistance going through the CDI, you do have manual right? You need to start checking wires (although 1 in a million go bad on a suzuki, I hope this is not the case) ..... first thing I would check is the timing and ignition .....

Yea - just down the street. I have been using Mac Marine 609-889-8228. He is on Rt47 just outside of Wildwood. So far he has been great (never found him to put in a part that I questioned or did the part swap to diagnose) - but tends to get backed up and it might take a couple of weeks till he can look at it... Mine is there now and promised for today. I'll repost with result when I get it back...
