87 four winns 170 horizon

like I said the "craze" is just starting
hope I hear from this one!!

Unfortunately, that boat has the undersireable Mercruiser 470 engine. This was a sort of an odd engine that doesn't have very good support. It is a 4 cylinder block made by Mercruiser with a head from a Ford 460. They have issues that can be resolved, but there are better boats with well supported engines out there. Keep shopping.

Stick with Mercruiser or Volvo stern drives with Chevy based engines for best parts support. For outboards, anything but Chrysler/Force is fine.

On that bass boat, the 120 Evinrude if in good condition would be worth at least $1500 (at least here in MN) if worse case you pulled it off and sold it. Something to think about anyway..

Re: A few nice Choices/ what do YOU think.

I bought a boat for the first time last year and admit I had GREEN stamped on my forehead. I checked out quite a few on Craigs List but only looked at 2 and bought the second one. My $1400 purchase ended up as $8000.00 in refurb, repair costs and a thoroughly p....ed off wife. With any used boat, like a used car, you are buying someone else's problems. As has been said $2K will not buy you much and you must be prepared to spend on the purchase. Commenting on the original 3 boats, my eye was caught by the nice profile of the first boat, but I wasn't entralled by the shape of the other 2. IMHO they looked old fashioned. The first boat admitted the floor was soft and that will likely mean a total refurb and unlikely to get in the water this year. The second boat you said you liked because of the interio, yet the seller admits the interior needs a re-do. You can either pay very little and get a boat you will need to spend and work on or you can put in more cash and get something newer and possibly less of a money pit. The middle road will likely end up where you get more of one and less of the other.
If I was to do the buying all over again, I would have spent a lot, lot more time physically checking out boats, rather than ogling pics on CL and getting info via email. Doing that will educate you so much more, plus yu will start to get a clear idea what your money buys you. Good luck.

And this is exactly what i am wanting to hear from everyone thank you! I do ogling pics but im looking for things for me to move on to the next choice not oh well its not that bad kind of stuff. This is defiantly a starter in every true sense of the meaning as i will probably be upgrading to something new within a year or two. So that being said I will be looking at multiple boats here next weekend and will bring home the victor or empty handed.

okay I guess another thing I should have added, I am trading my Ruger AR15 and max of 750 to 800. which hinders abit but we love our guns here.

Sell the guns for cash. Then use the cash for a boat purchase. Trying to find a seller that will trade a boat for a gun will SEVERELY limit your choices.

i have two 18 foot bayliners from the early 80's one is a bowrider and other is a cuddy, they both have a 4 cylinder volvo engine/outdrive. the bowrider will do 40mph with 3 200-250lbs guys in it,and it will tow a family of four tubbing no problem. The cuddy does well also just not quite as fast around 32mph and take a little longer to get on plane and plane speed is higher. i find they are good on gas in comparison to the 22 foot aft cabin with a 4.3lx merc that i had, but that was a bigger and lot heavier boat, and under powered. I boat on the detroit river and lake st clair .

Oh I don't know. Just imagine standing in front of the boat owner pointing your shotgun and pistol at him. I think you'd get a few willing to negotiate!! LOL:laugh:

The Starcraft is a really great hull to start with, but there's nothing in the ad about the engine/outdrive. If it need a new one, be aware that it will take a lot of power to push 22 ft of boat and cost will add up quickly...

Aluminium hulls take a lot less power than glass hulls, I have had both of them and will only have aluminium from now on. I have a 22' Islander with a 140 hp I/O and it has plenty of power for my needs. She will top 34 mph with two adults and fishing gear with a 15 hp troller hanging on the back. I avg more than 5mpg which is great for a boat, typical cruising speed is 22-24 mph on the big lake. Can't really run much harder than that on big water do to waves. Lots of room, big open cockpit, small cuddy to store stuff and keep it dry, positively my favorite boat of all time. Just mt two cents worth anyhow.......

That's a really good point. Gun market what it is right now, AR frames might as well be located in pots of gold at the end of rainbows. It should be easy to sell it outright ... and get a GOOD price on a Ruger AR.

Proceed with caution ... ad reads like that was a Michigan "lake" boat (parked at someone's lake house in the water). They tend to rot out a little quicker if not cared for ... and the floor had to be redone on that one.

I am walking the thin line with everything and any calls I make sound like a robot with a check list now thanks to you guys! lol Have a few boating friends so I feel more comfortable with the idea of having to repair/ replace. Just want a strong motor the rest will follow suit.

Re: A few nice Choices/ what do YOU think.

Okay guys i have another question. Salvage titles what can / cant you do with them. none of the boats I am looking at have them, but a few i have come across in the last few days are saying "lost title but will get salvage to sell"?? I am going to look this up on our gov. page but still interested in anyone's experiences. I want a clean title because I do not want a hassle but if worse comes to wears I may have to.

No Title equals No Sale. And on that rinker it looks like the skeg (fin on bottom of outdrive ) is broken off.
