I have had this motor, along with another that is identical to it, for a couple years now. One is a 1965 33 HP Evinrude Ski-Twin.

The other is the same, only it is a '66

The '66 runs great-I have it on my 15 ft. Ebbtide fishing boat.
The other one has some issues...
I bought it and rebuilt the carb, fired her right up in a tub of water and thought everyhing was hunky-dory. Come to find out when I get it on the water, it feels like it is just chugging. Its seems like it is wanting to go but it just wont. I had this problem with a jet ski and it was the wrong spark plug. Could this be a possibility? I was also going to check the compression, thought that might be the issue.
Also, I am having so shifting issues with it as well. The PO had absolutely mutilated the prop (how I don't know) assuming he ran into some rocks, or went too far up on the trailer...anyway, the gears were all bound up so I had a certified machanic fix her up for me. Once I got it back it dawned on me that while he was in there I should have had him replace the seals. So, I order the seals and take it to someone else b/c the other guy was too busy. Anyway, I took it back to the river (knowing I had powerhead issues) just to see if the shifting was fixed. It was indeed and shifted very smoothly, however on my way back I completely lost forward gear. I then tried to use reverse but no reverse. I am going to check the rod that connects shifter lever to the gears in the lower unit to make sure it didn't come loose but are there any other ideas about what may have happened? I would like to fix this myself b/c the certified mechanic was quite pricey:eek:
Thanks for the help!!

Sounds like your moving the right direction by checking the shift rod, but check the shear pin on your prop first.

possibly the rod is loose or maybe the shift cable broke .you said you did a carb rebuild but you never said anything about the points or coils, theres a possible culprit for the poor running as those coils may be original and shot.

Yeah, if hotrod goofed up the prop, more'n likely goofed up the shear pin also. You didn't say if it rev'd away from you or not, but it could be the shift rod didn't get tightened back up after the work was done.

I don't think it is the shear pin as I didn't hit anything with it while underway. I am assuming the shear pin wouldn't break without anything coming in contact with the prop?
As for the points and coils, is there any noticeable way of seeing if they are bad?
Thanks guys

Check for spark on both cylinders from the chugging, typically they run great at idle and in the barrel but won't plane the boat to save their lives when running on one cylinder. If I suspect something is messed up under the flywheel I pull it and look. Have you swapped props to see if it was a prop issue? With the motor off and wires disconnected, shift it into gear and rotate the prop by hand and see what happens.

If you don't have any gears at all, then likely your shift rod coupler come loose. That's an easy fix fortunately, but check the shear pin on the prop. They have broke just from being old and not neccessarily hitting anything.

If you have to re-connect the shift rod, just remove that obround plate on the lower part of your motor leg and you'll see right away if the shift rod come loose from the coupler. Chances are, the last guy who worked on it, left the bolt loose and it fell out during operation, or he missed the grove on the rod, when he re-connected it to the coupler. The grove on the end of the shift rod is supposed to be perfectly inline of the bolt hole of the coupler.
