I have located a 1975 Evinrude 70hp w/tilt and trim for $500. The model number is 70573 E. From the pics, the motor looks real clean. Owner says it runs like a top. Can anyone tell me some info about these motors? Were they good? What should I look for on it before purchase? I am looking to replace my 1965 Johnson Super Sea Horse 60hp with the Evinrude. What could I expect from the change? My boat is a 1965 Alumacraft Belmara 17ft. Thanks for any information and things to look for that you guys can give me.

Check compression, lower unit oil for water, spark and by all means do a water test if possiable. Those engines if they have been maintained properly are usually pretty bullet proof. Can't help with the performance questions on your boat, to many variables.

is this model the dreaded electric shift that some people say to stay away from?

If it's in good shape I would expect to see somewhere around 135-150 per cylinder. It could be a little lower if the engine has not been run for awhile. I use a compression tester that screws into the plug hole, but any good tester should work for you.

Electric shift was 1972-1973 if I remember correctly, at least the 50 hp was. Looking up your parts on shop.evinrude.com, looks like its a normal shifting beast.

+1... Daviet is steering you in the right direction with his comments.

Not electric shift lower. No real warts other than age.

Gas "mileage" will be noticeable better and of course. top end speed.

If the T&T is functional, it's worth $350+ (T&T alone).

Good luck!

If the compression checks out good and no water or metal shavings in the g/c I'd probably buy it. If you can run it do a cylinder drop test on it.

I also found a 1988 Evinrude 40hp model E40ELCCS with low hours for $750obo. Does this seem like a decent deal? How would my performance change from the 1965 Johnson 60hp? I'm guessing fuel consumtion would be much better, but how about speed? I kind of like the idea of the motor being lighter. Would I be better going this route over the 1975 70hp?

If it were me, on a 17' boat I would go with the 75hp engine as long as it checked out. That is a good price.

14 mm.

Why are you looking to replace your existing motor? How is the performance? What is it used for?

Usually, when your looking for a low priced motor, it's reliability times 3 - which starts with condition.

However, people lose their mind in search of a handful of mph - and it keeps my shop in business.

You have a short season and if your Aluminum boat is not too heavy, the 40hp will likely be more reliable and could be propped to get you to the fishing grounds and back.

Your 60 is somewhat ancient technology and heavy. Both the 70 and 40 are "Modern" era motors.

The 40 being a bit more refined than the 70hp and compared to the 70 is as 50hp.

The lower units need to be double-checked for leakage.

Both compression values run ~150psi warm, when new.

Re: a few questions about 1975 Evinrude 70hp?

what do you mean by the 40hp being a 50 compared to the 70? I am looking to replace the old 1965 Johnson with a newer better running motor. the Johnson has a carb issue and I am getting water in the lower unit. I like that the 40 is newer and lighter than the 70, but the 70 has power t/t, not sure about the 40. Also, I am worried about getting the 40, then wishing I would have gone bigger for a little more speed. the boat weighs about 500 pounds, how many mph difference do you think I would see between the 40 and 70 with 2 people in the boat (sometimes 4)? Thanks for answering my many questions.

1: HP standards have changed. The japs were sending outboards in the late 70's with power measured at the prop shaft - not at the crankshaft. They were running rings around the US motors. The 40 is of the era of the more conservative HP rating.

2: Makes sense to cut losses with your older motor.

3: Compared to your 60 (a tank), both 40 and 70 are light - weight of the motor is a non-issue.

4: T&T is nice, but it hard to find a reliable runner in that price point. Both are fairly easy to tilt , compared to your 60HP beast.

5: Speed. You didn't indicate what you are getting for speed and what the boat is used for. Everyone wants more power and top speed. ...that attitude changes fast when they break down.

Re: a few questions about 1975 Evinrude 70hp?

I actually just picked the boat up a few weeks ago, so I really haven't had the time yet to test out the speed with the carb issues. The boat will mainly be used for running around on the lake. Maybe pull a young kid on a tube and some fishing, but mostly running around and enjoying days out on the water. So, if the boat was rated for a 75hp in 1965, it would more likely be rated for a 65hp today?
