a shop i worked at thru last summer told me a funny story about sending the new guy out for some prop pitch, dressed him up in the painter suit with the elbow length gloves and sent him to the local fibreglass repair shop with very stern warnings about this very toxic chemical.
they called ahead to enlist the help of the fibreglass guy who repeated the warnings and gave him a lidless (no lid, builds too much pressure) jar half full of fibre glass resin and sent him away back to his own shop. the photos i saw had me in stitches.

I knew fibreglass repairers made too much money.. lol..

Is that like buying a can of chequered paint?

or asking for a long weight?

or a left handed screwdriver?

some people have too much time on thier hands at work.

Back in the vacuum tube days it was common practice to send a newbie out for a grid leak drip pan.

We always send the apprentice electricians out to the trailer to find the wire stretcher. Funny watching them search around for it, not to mention the looks they get when they ask for help finding it.

Gee no one remembers the old bucket of line slack? Or have someone stand watch for the Mail Bouy! I was in a communications Co. & we sent some kid fresh from boot camp out to find a T-R-Double-E, took him most of the day to figure out it was a tree. Fun in the USMC

we used to send appentice machinists on maidenhead oil hunts. the machine slide lube alerts woud trigger and they would not read the placard so they would come ask. we sent them to a good gal named Liz for a bucket of it. she had two buckets, one labeled detergent and one labled non-detergent. so we would send them to her and she would ask which they wanted so they would come back and ask and we would specify and next thing ya know the guy was humping a bright red 5 gallon bucket of maidenhead oil across the shop to everyones amusement. or we would send them to the tool crib for a put back tool :) .

While working at a fast food restaurant when I was young, I stood in front of a prep table that had a steam plate to "freshen" the buns- we used to send people for a can of steam.

The best was sending the young mechanics at the Ford dealership to the parts department to get a set of spark plugs for a 1988 F-350 with a 6.9 liter diesel with A/C and PowerAssist brakes. (We'd give them all the details so they would annoy the krap out of the parts guys.) They'd spend the rest of the day trying to get us back.

when I was about 14 yrs old my dad had me searching for a left handed pipe wrench when I couldn't find one he asked me to call a few hardware stores for him. Small town I swear everyone was in on it, i called 3 places before someone told me I was had. Heck one place said they had one in stock I rode my bike there to get it and when i got there they said they just sold it.

Used to ask for a metric cresent wrench, then one day the Snap-On man had one, go figure. Also, in autobody, there never seemed to be a place to hook if you wanted to pull straight up on something, We used to send the new shop kids to the parts department for a "Sky Hook".

In the Navy we would send boots looking for chow line.

I once had an ET2(E5 Electronic Tech) helping me calibrate ESM antennas. I had him go to supply looking for relative bearing grease.

Current job, someone was in training and the instructor sent him looking for Cat5 wireless cable.

the best was in past years gone by when gas stations had attendants, my dad had a honda 600 2dr auto. he would pull in get out and tell the attendaant to fill it up and check the water and then proceed inside.
if you did not know the tank fill was on the left door jamb and ya had to open the door to find it ya never would. and it was a 2 cyl air cooled. he would stand inside and laugh with the station owners :) :)

We sent a girl into the auto parts store for a bottle of blinker fluid one night when her turn signals werent working. She was not happy.
Since there are some electricians out there, ever went to the supply house for some factory 1/2" EMT 90's? Or, a case of box offsets? A bucket of amps? The best one is to tell the new grunt to "push" a rope into a conduit.I actually had a guy try for about 10 minutes before asking me if there was a easier way to do it. :D
