A good, cheap GPS speedo?

I'm looking for a GPS replacement for my malfunctioning speedometer. I'm not into fishing and the boat will be confined to a relatively small lake, so I don't really need fishfinding or extensive navigational capabilities. Any recommendations?

I believe most of the little handheld GPS units will show speed. I have a Magellan GPS 315 that I bought years ago that does it.

Its called SOG or Speed over Ground. Don't believe there is a unit that does not have the feature.

Try this 1.

Trip computer: Current speed, average speed, time of sunrise/sunset, resetable maximum speed, trip timer, and trip distance
lots of other good things too!

Realgun is on the mark about SOG capabilities. I believe this is about the least expensive portable unit on the market, it has WAAS, and it's rated IPX7 compliant (won't leak with accidental immersion up to 1 meter deep for 30 mins)

available here: (EDIT: We don't post direct links to commercial sites. Especially competitor's sites)

or here:

http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cg... cobra&**********=199648627&*******=628898046

Re: A good, cheap GPS speedo?

Like the guys said, I think all hand held GPS's have an accurate speed function. I have used this route for years and am happy. You'll probably want to buy the mounting bracket and power supply designed for the unit you have in mind so make sure it has them available and budget for the cost. Also, when my hand held GPS finally bites the dust (probably never - it's about 10 years of hard use already), I'll probably select for the display features - I'd want a nice big speed reading if possible since that's what I use more than almost anything else.

Thanks guys! That little Garmen model looks like exactly what I need. One more question: Does it have a mounting bracket....couldn't tell from the listing.

Hey, the Cobra looks even better! Anyone have experience with it? Any problems?

eclymer,

I'm in the same situation as you (looking for speedometer capability and basic GPS tracking), so this thread has been very helpful to me. I did a quick search on reviews for the Cobra GPS, and while the price is very attractive, what I found were a lot of lukewarm to negative reviews.

However, I found almost all positive reviews on the Garmin eTrex, so I just went ahead and ordered that one online from Circuit City. My total was $99 out the door.

You might see what you can find out on the web, but based on what I saw, I decided to stay away from the Cobra.

Just my $.02

I saw a Magellan 2000 XL gps on ebay today for 29 bucks. I bought one like it 2 years ago for $90. It has all the gps functions.. speed, etc. Just an old unit without color and mapping. Something like that would work just fine for speed.
