I was watching "Meet The Press" this AM and it occurred to me that there is something all of the debaters are overlooking (both sides).

November, 1973, Warrenville, IL. I am hunting pheasants in a cornfield with my good friend, the Superintendent of the school district of which I was President.

We made a mistake. Each of us picked out a rooster track in the fresh snow to follow, and we seperated.

About 5 min. later I heard a rooster flush. I looked up and about 50yds away was the bird, flying straight at me with my friend exactly on the other side of him pointing his shotgun right at both of us. I ducked.

I took birdshot on the top of my head and on my shoulders which knocked me down and out. No serious or permanent damage. Three shot penetrated my hat and scalp and lodged there. The shot that hit my shoulders did not penetrate my jacket. I came to and stood up before he reached me. I was bleeding pretty well and the blood was running down my face.

My friend went into shock and required sedation for two days. I don't think he has fully recovered to this day. I got my head shaved and three little round band aids. I don't even have scars that I can see.

I was slightly injured in a hunting accident. End of story?

I wonder if anyone has any compassion for VP Cheney's state of mind after injuring his friend? My friend was a great deal more injured by the incident than was I. He thought for a few seconds that he had killed me. Coincidentally, his name was also Richard.

Give the guy a break.

JB

this troll is not worthy of you.
and I want you, as supreme commander of iboats, to MAKE IT GO AWAY, please :) :) .
man its the only thing on today.
I could not care if both were staggering drunk while hunting or if the press was never notifeid.
it was two friends hunting and due to a series of careless, not crimminal, acts one got shot and luckily survived.
the press is just mad cause they got scooped.
they need to get over it.
I was more concerned that the VP of the free world failed to get the proper documents to legally hunt, yet I understand how it happens with some of the rapidly changing fish/game laws.

so please please make them all go away :) .

Re: A JB TROLL!!

My Uncle shot my father in a bird hunting incident many years ago. My father still carries a few pellets from the ordeal. My uncle was highly impacted by this. When he was drafted for Vietnam he went as Conciencious objecter and went as a medic so he wouldn't have to carry a weapon. The family was and is as a whole still a very active outdoors family. My uncle did not resume hunting or shooting until his boys were of age. At this time he had to reconcile his feelings and decided it was important they learn safe weapon handling as well as the joy of the outdoors. His boy's now enjoy hunting and he even does some hunting also.

I have considered cheney's position, I hope for the pundent's sake he will not forsake his support of the sport. However if he does resume hunting and shooting I'm certian he will have a mental giant to wrestle with. I hope for my sake and other's who enjoy the sport that the only thing that comes of this is an emphisis on safty...It is still one of the safest sport's around.

Don't want to ruffle any feathers here so I'll tread lightly. I know political discussions always carry a certain amount of "heat." So I'll just say in my softest, quietest voice "You have a good point there JB" ;) (Fireship 1 walks slowly away from the danger zone) :D

Yep, what he said :) because he uses better and bigger words :D
I read on another site that TP&W was not enforcing the new law until next year, that they were issueing warnings.
Try telling that to the hunter who was caught illegly hunting on me this year. No valid migratory bird stamp was one of the many fines he got.

I think it's safe to say that any person with a concious would be effected by such an event, some more than others but effected never the less...even the person on the recieving end could be. What we are seeing is all "free press". They just got nothing else to talk about until the next "event" comes about.

I agree....give the guy a break.

Re: A JB TROLL!!

It would be a bad enough thing for Mr Joe Average to have an accident and injure his friend... but I can only begin to imagine what it must be like having not only that to deal with, but also having it as a high profile story published in not only your own country, but also the international news media (yes it even got coverage down here in NZ). Add to that a significant percentage of your political enemies & countrymen wanting to twist the knife to do you the most political damage as possible...

It is a reminder that fame is a double edged sword and at times there are advantages to being just Mr Joe Average...

Re: A JB TROLL!!

What bugged me more than anything about this incident was not that it didn't get reported fast enough, but rather all the excuse-makers coming out of the woodwork to say that getting shot by your hunting partner is just part of the game, and that it happens all the time and is no big deal, as long as no one gets killed by it. As a former firearm safety instructor, I can tell you that if you are following a few basic rules, you will not shoot your hunting partner. Period. The fact that the VP and JB's friend both shot their hunting partners indicates that they were both operating outside the normally accepted rules of firearm safety, and luckily in both instances, no one was killed. It is simply crazy talk to go rushing to the VP's defense over this, claiming that it was really the victim's fault for getting in the way, and I think all of those who came out with those excuses were made fools of when the VP finally spoke about it and took the responsibility like he should.

As to how the VP "felt" about it all, isn't that a little touchy-feely for the conservative crowd? I don't really care how he "felt". He should feel bad, because he screwed up and almost killed someone over a quail. The fact that he didn't wasn't due to his strength of character or anything like that. It was just pure, dumb luck.

Besides, there are those of us out there who often wonder if the VP is really and truly a warm blooded mammal like the rest of us. He doesn't often seem like it... ;)

Let me tell you one thing I know for a fact. This is not hear say or book reading that made me come to this conclusion.
If and when a person drops the hammer or causes the death of another human life and it does not have an adverse affect on them then they are without conscious.
When a person can injure or remove a life with out remorse then they have a serous problem.

I know with out a doubt Mr cheney would if he could turn back the hands of time he would undo this tragedy that has befallen upon him.

Believe me gentlemen if this ever occur es in your life time it will live with you through your living days.

BTW JB good illustration and a good troll as you put it.

I think the media is again confused.
Where the 1st ammendment gives them the right to report on any news they know. It doesn't give them the right to know everything or speculate or report on the news they don't have.
