Re: A lesson on foreign policy.

Since many here like to place blame because of the faliures of past U.S. Presidents (re. Bill Clinton) I though some of you may be interested in the failures of past Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush...
.....Nice background snapper...when are you gonna get to the Smoking GUN!

You failed to illustrate your point..you must of cut and pasted from a lib pundit artical who used it to raise your suspicion. The only thing you left out was the title that probably accuses but does not confirm the idea... the libs need your help badly... but sorry, no Smoking GUN here. Nice try.

Re: A lesson on foreign policy.

I finally waded throgh the original post Snapper. Maybe the alternative of a USSR success in Afghanistan would have been the true nightmare scenario. We have to deal with one situation at a time. The prob I have with the prior administration was that it was distracted from the task at hand( there's a joke there somewhere). I personally wouldnt fault them as harshly but for my perception that their motivations were personal and not based on the best interests of the country( leave the problems for some other administration...not gonna open that can of worms... etc).

Re: A lesson on foreign policy.

as usual I am underslept and overtired ...

does that mean that the Taliban is basically a group that spun out of involvement with the CIA? The founders were trained by the CIA?

whether they kill UBL or not, suddenly I dont feel too well!!!!

cmon, either im not comprehending, or this is another urban legend

right???

Re: A lesson on foreign policy.

I do not think this is an urban ledgend, Ray...

As for those who need evidence of a "smoking gun" (Oddjob) I'd like to ask you a question? Just how did U.S. made Stinger antiaircraft missiles and other U.S. made arms get into the hands of Afgahn freedom fighters durring their war with the Soviet Union? Osmosis? What would be the point of sending these arms without some training as to how to properly use them? Looks like the smoking gun to me... Thankfully, most of the weapons Like Stinger missiles that were sent to Afgahnistan during the 80's are now unoperational due to age and neglect...

You may say or think that U.S. CIA involvement with Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence agency, the mujahidin, and what later came to be as the Taliban is just alot of smoke, but I believe there is some fire there... Perhaps a rouge element in the CIA, but U.S. involvement none the less..

As for the liberals, they are not going to get my help and neither are the conservatives.. My opinion, neither side has much to offer...

Re: A lesson on foreign policy.

Our involvement in training and equiping the mujahidin is a matter of hsitorical fact. The Sovets were our enemny, our biggest threat, and we, rightly so, helped the mujahidin defeat them in Afhganastan. It also hastened the fall of the Soviets.

When the war was over and the Soviets withdrew, so did we. Our job was done. Nobody cared anymore. The place was a wasteland after a decade of war. We had no national interest there anymore so we moved on to the next problem. I'll give any man who could forsee what would happen there a big pat on the back.

Now, at some point during the CLINTON admin it did become obvious what was going on there and they did NOTHING. NOTHING. NOTHING. Despite having a CIA list of trgets to strike there after the Cole. Also a matter of historical fact. To reach back to RR or GBI and blame them is a stretch.

Saddam tried to kill GB I. A matter of historical fact. What did BC do? Lobe a couple of missles. I would have declared war and killed the whole lot. Firget the UN resolutions to disarm, trying to kill a US president is an act of war that Clinton Ignored. Just like he ignored the attack on the Cole and our emabssies - both also acts of war.

Did RR support Iraq during the Iraq/Iran war? You bet. We hated the Iraninas as much as the Soviets for what they did to our hostages and their support of terrorism (read hostages in Lebanon, bombings in Isreal). But we were smart enough to help him just enough not to lose and we also secretly helped the Iranians with spare parts, etc. We wanted each side to slaughter each other with no winner and that is what we got.

Our enemies were emboldened and encouraged by 8 years of inaction. Funny how there have been no major attacks at home or on US interests since we kicked a little A$$ in Afhganastan and Iraq... Compare that to 8 years where we had:

1) The Embassy bombings
2) The Kobart Towers
3) Modadishu
4) The Cole

and finally,

5) 911

Appeasement does not work. It never has and never will. When you cowtow to madmen you invite disaster. That is the lesson from the Clinton years.

Re: A lesson on foreign policy.

Snapper that artical you pasted anwsers your question...NO ONE disputes that that happened. Ralph explained it also.

I still dont see where these men you named made some big mistake, knowingly or unknowingly. Unless your one to assign guilt by association.

I guess I failed your lesson in foreign policy. Meanwhile, I do understand Bush's foriegn policy and I see it working as we speak. All the rag-tops are pouring into Iraq to take their medicine now. We dont have to go and find these morons, their coming to us and will soon be with Ala and his 50 virgins. Its a win win situation. God Bless America!

I respectfully disagree snapper, but I wish you well and have a good weekend!
