So far, I have followed the OEM service manual to a "T", and got some really great advice, tips, tricks, AND help from fellow iboats members. This was my first, ever, outboard powerhead overhaul and I've been really really patient, but anxious, to get her singing again. Today, I finally got to hear just that. She carried a tune so smooth it brought a tear to my eye. I have a lot of time and money invested in her, and I hope she will stay with me for several more years to come. Not only did I want a reliable outboard, but I wanted to learn all I could about the workings, both internally and externally, of my equiptment. Thanks to everyone here who has helped me in bringing life back to this old 1979 Evinrude 140. I've learned a hell of a lot!!!! With a little luck, maybe now I can go do what brings me the most enjoyment in my life, with a clear head. To everyone here who has ever offered their advice in helping me, thank you ALL for a most excellent and informative site. Especially, thank you for sharing your wisdom with those of us not so fortunate to possess it. You guy's are truely a blessing!!! My hat is off to you!!!......................... THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH I APPRECIATE ALL YOUR HELP AND WHAT IT MEANS TO ME!!!!..............And if you ever see this old 1978 Maidencraft boat, powered by this 'ol girl, stick your arm out the window and let me wave at ya!!! If you can catch up with me, I'll even have some breakfast, lunch, or dinner with ya..........ON ME!!! Excellent site gentlemen/women!!! Keep it up!!!................THANKS AGAIN !!!!!............................ALAN

Keep her cool, keep her lubricated, and keep her properly carbureted and she'll be with you for many more years. Good job. Boat safely.

Re: A LETTER OF APPRECIATION.

Alan,

I envy what you have just accomplished! I just had to have my 1988 90hp Johnson re-built. I had to have it done by someone else because I just didn't have the time to do it. I would like to have learned what you just did. Congrats!

Re: A LETTER OF APPRECIATION.

Currently, I'm turning a Rampage SS 20 pitch prop, as I know for a fact she'll push close to 6K with it, if not a little more now. I don't know if it's just me or not, but she seems to run better now than I remember several months back. I just want to take things slow and break her in right. She planes at a boats length or even a little less. I'm coming out of the hole like being shot from a gun. Temps are hovering around spec at around 130* and holding a steady 20 psi on the water pressure guage @ 3K rpms. Once back at the ramp, I removed the cowling to compare the temps via feeling the heads with my hands. Both are close to being the same now. I'll dig into the setup a little deeper when the break-in is complete. She's still a little rough around the edges, as I still need to put a seal kit in that tilt and trim unit. It appears both trim cylinders are leaking. So some minor work still needs to be done, still yet. The tilt and trim unit on there right now, isn't the original. So I'll need to get the numbers off of it and try to locate a seal kit. I'll see if I can post those numbers today and start looking around for one.

Re: A LETTER OF APPRECIATION.

Congrats to you on your accomplishment and your consideration for those who helped you in your feat.

It really makes helping worthwhile when you get a little positive feedback and know that your help actually meant something.

I don't think I participated in your venture but I wanted you to know how I felt regardless.

Good running and if you are a rabbit outta-da-hole and running 6k+ looks like you are ready for a couple more inches in the prop.

Texasmark........... It's really a pleasure to be surrounded by folks this helpful. So far to date, I've not seen one negative remark on any thread I've visited. Iboats is truely a class act and I'm proud to be a part of that. The moderators may, at times, seem a little quick to point out flaws, but hey, they do an absolutely GREAT job from the screen I'm veiwing from !!! Keep up the good work guys/gals. ................... ALAN

Alan:
Great Job that you did! Now you have a new motor. I am glad you saved alot of money and got to know what makes your Evinrude 140 motor tick. Good Luck!

Re: A LETTER OF APPRECIATION.

if ya want some parts and want to make a road trip I am gonna toss one in the trash.
its a 79 140 that sank about a year after i rebuilt it.
guy took two weeks getting it to me and by that time the powerhead was junk. its been sitting in my field since 2002 or so and by feb 07 it will be gone from the property.
those motors did run sweet when running right though.
keep looking for me about here. in a couple hours I head from Caracas to Rio chico Venezuela and wont be back on the computer till sunday or monday, depending on how good the fishing is.

Re: A LETTER OF APPRECIATION.

Glad to hear things are running good so far. I also would like to throw out a very sincere thank you to those of you that helped me on my rebuild/troubleshooting on my motor. I was hoping to get it to the lake this weekend after finally getting it back from the shop after taking it in for shifting issues and coming back with a LU rebuild, but I haven't had the chance because of rain.

Re: A LETTER OF APPRECIATION.

Wow! Turning the 20 pitch SS at 6k or above is impressive. What speeds are you running at that RPM? I would think you would want to go to a 21 because that sounds like a little over tach'ing.

I had a similar hull to yours with a 78 115 on it w/ a 21 pitch prop - it turned right at 5800 @ WOT

Re: A LETTER OF APPRECIATION.

79Rude115............ I'm not possitive, as of yet, what it will or won't do. I haven't had it at WOT since the rebuild. I plan to GPS the rig once I get her broken in and have completed my setup. My main focus right now, however, is to get her broken in properly. I have a friend with an OMC 19" SS prop that's been cupped. I tried it last year and was very impressed with it. I bought the Rampage 20" prop because it was very similar in performance and it had a nice pollished shine. I will likely set the boat up with my worst case senario, having both livewells full of water, two people in the boat with gear, and a full tank of gas. It will turn 5800 rpm, or possibly a little more (but not less), when I'm done. This way I know I'm not lugging the motor at the beginning of the day's trips. I don't generally run WOT everywhere I go either. I try to find that sweet spot for fuel economy. Usually at 5000-5200 rpm's. Too, If I'm by myself, I will just back off a bit to prevent over reving if I need to get in a big hurry about things that is. I'll set it up, worst case senario, at 5800+ rpms, just to be on the safe side. I'll get back with you on the speed at WOT though. But it will be a while. If I had to guess, I'd say she'll run in the mid to low 50's...........................ALAN
