I have just aquired a 70's - 80's Johnson 9.9. I just want ot be sure it is in good working order. I mounted it on the boat, put some muffs on it and it started right up on the third pull. What I did was pump the bulp, choke it, turn the mixture almost to full rich. Just as soon as It started it I pushed the choke in and gradually turned the mixture knob to nearly full lean in about 3 mins. I am not sure if this is right but I can not rev the engine over an idle unsless it is in gear. I know there is something in the linkage that stops you from reving the neutral, but I would think you sould be able to get a few extra rev's when starting cold. It may not be an issue though because it was around 40 deg last night when I started it and it did not stall and warmed up well. This model has an idle speed twist knob on the side that doesn't seem to anything. As far as water pump, with the muffs on it shoots an "0k" steam out of the hole in the back and shoots a better stronger stream out a hole on the left side of the foot. I sure its suppose to do that.LOL. I am going to install a new impeller before I use the motor. I have put and impeller on a 125 merc that was no problem. Is there anything tricky or that I need to watch for on this one? Also if someone could tell me what year model this motor is it may be helpful down the line. The model # is unreadable but the serial # is E5597573. Thanks, Chris

Try looking on the welch plug on the powerhead for the model #.

From the sounds of your description of the idle speed adjuster I'm guessing you might have a 9.5 there. Need the model number to be sure though.

The welch plug is a little quarter-sized metal disk located on the powerhead. It'll have the model number stamped into it.

Okay, maybe I read something into that description that wasn't there. Is the idle adjust at the base of the handle (as in part of the whole handle assembly), or on the side of the engine cowling?

Base of the handle = 9.5 which was made until '73.
Side of the cowling = 9.9 made from '74+

Model # is still the real deal though.

The idle adjuster is on the side of the cowl, also where on the powerhead is that welsh plug?

On top, in back, and on the starboard side if memory serves.

On the case engine case just below and beside the flywheel.

I have a 75 9.9. Changing the water pump is pretty much the same as any other. Mine has the idle throttle limit and idle speed limit. It is a good idea to change the water pump to be sure though with the water flow that you have you should be alright.

Whaen you have the lower unit off to do thet water pump look down the cavity of the lower unit from the top. Crud can get in there and block the drain hole at the bottom. This is common for salt water engines.

Looking for pictures - couldn't come up with any. But, here's a really nice article about your motor:

Re: a little 9.9 info?

I just re-read you original post. I may have misunderstood. That motor has a speed limiter in that with the motor in neutral you can not run the it over about 1/3 speed. This is a blocking cam on the shift linkage to the right behind the carb. In neutral it is raised up to block the timing plate from rotating. The old cams were metal while the newer ones are a black plastic.
