A little help...

So I got the lean pop out and today went and changed the foot oil. Well there was no oil it was water. Put foot oil in and put fresh water in barrel. Looks like it is not holding the oil. It looks as if it is all floating on top of the water after I ran it. What is the problem to fix this time? Motor is 1965 Evinrude Fastwin 18 hp.Any help appreciated.

First, be sure to use high viscosity gear oil (within the range of 75-90) and be sure to use new nylon seals on the fill and vent screws.

To find which seal is leaking, you need to apply 12-15 PSI pressure to the gearcase with no oil in it. With pressure on, if the leak is not immediately apparent, put the pressurized unit in water and look for the air bubbles.

The oil on the water could be the oil residue from the exhaust. If it was dark brown it definitely could be. 2 cycle exhaust always leaves oil on the water surface. It also drips out after you shut it off where ever your exhaust exits the motor, most exit by the prop. The smell may tell you which it is. Gear lube is much thicker than 2 cycle oil & smells different. Check the level in LU, if it's the same than you haven't lost any. But check it frequently if you think you're leaking some.

How do I keep 12-15 psi on the unit? Air hose? The oil floating smells like gear oil not 2 cycle. Turned a greyish color after mixing with water, and maybe a little black oil left on the walls of the casing.

Sounds like your LU is leaking. Gray is how my LU oil looks when mixed with water. I used a tire pump to check the pressure in mine. I used the screw in fitting from a pump to pump oil into LU. I cut the line & attached hose to a tee that went to pump on one side & a fuel pressure gauge on the other. I got the gauge from Autozone for less than $25.00. It has both positive & negative readings. Pump up the unit till the gauge reads 12-15 psi & let it set. If it leaks it will drop. If not than I pumped it to what my manual said to. (I forget exact amount) Let that set awhile & see if it drops. After that pull negative pressure. I think 3"-5" hg. Not sure of the terminology but it's inches of mercury column. I didn't have a way to pump negative pressure but the amount is low enough I just sucked on the hose & clamped it off. Buy a manual on the motor. The money it will save you on changing the seals will more than pay for it. Mine cost $30.00. Sounds like you need to replace your seals. I had 2 leaks, 2 seasons apart. First was seals at prop, second was seals at top around shift rod o ring. You are better off doing both at once. Change your impeller (water pump) while doing seals at top. The seal kits included seals for both top & bottom. iboats has best price for both seals & impeller & I got them in 2 days.
