Hi Guys,

NOT particularly good with math so..

I need to figure out how many gallons of gas my tank holds. Don't have a clue. Boat is new to me this Spring, P.O. didn't know.

Can I measure lenghtXwidthXheight and figure it out? I'm guessing 15 to 20 gallons...

I fill from a 6 gallon can and have never filled the tank in the boat.

And a related question. Short of using multiple gas cans, is there an easier way to fill the tank in the boat? The 6 gallon can is a bit heavy to maneuver around.....

Re: A little math problem...help...

Simply trailer it to the gas station and "fill 'er up" then you'll know for sure. The fuel/oil mix should be 50:1 which works out to just under 12oz.of oil to 1 gal. of gas.

Yes measure it

Do it in inches l x w x h get the volume in cubic inches.

Divide by 231 to convert to US gallons

The fuel/oil mix should be 50:1 which works out to just under 12oz.of oil to 1 gal. of gas.

No it doesn't

A 50:1 fuel mix is near enough 1 pint in 6 gallons

More precisely it is 2.56 fluid ounces per US gallon

NO! NO! NO ! 2.56 oz of oil per gal of gas is a 50:1 12 oz per gal comes out to 10.67:1 128 oz in a gal I believe :p:confused::D

I already pointed out that error, although a little more calmly... read previous posts

Ok great, that calculator solves one problem, thanks!

Still looking for a better way to fuel the boat. A trip to the gas station would work...but I am concerned about having the oil mix well doing it that way so have been premixing in a six gallon can.

Put the oil in before you leave for the station. When you drive from the station to the ramp the gas/oil will be mixed with all that driving. I fill my tank in 6 gallon increments, 1 pint of oil for every 6 of fuel. This is what I use, makes it very easy with the measurements marked on the funnel and the valve to just drain the oil into the tank (if you fill on water the station attendants will be impressed how fast you do it:)):

It has a little over 2 pint capacity, so thats one pour for every 12 gals you fill...

I always pour in the oil first, and then fill the tank with gas. The filling of the tank will make sure all the oil is mixed well with the fuel.

Guesstimate how much fuel you'll put in, add oil for half that amount, put in the fuel you want, add additional oil so the total oil is correct for the amount of fuel. Sounds more complicated than it really is ...

You can buy the oil in quarts or pints. One quart = 12 gallons of gas. One Pint = 6 gallons of gas. Buy 2 quarts and go to the gas station. Put one quart of oil in the tank, then pump 12 gallons in. Then check the gas gauge on the boat. If it looks like it will hold another 6 gallons, add one pint (half qt), then pump 6 more gallons of gas.

Remember gas is made from oil. they mix VERY easily. Pour it in and drive to the ramp, either put it in before or after. It will be well mixed. Rick

Re: A little math problem...help...

There are a number of larger fuel tanks with wheels that can be filled at the gas station and then wheeled to the dock where gravity works its magic, provided the boat is lower than the level of fuel in the portable tank. These are not cheap however and you still need to lift them in and out of the truck. You will not get them in and out of a car trunk. Perhaps two three gallon portables would work better. Lighter on each arm.

When you add oil (wherever you do it) by the time fuel is added and the boat wiggles a little it will be mixed. This is not the issue it used to be when standard engine oil was used in two stroke engines.

When you don't know how much oil to add since you don't know how much fuel you will be adding, do it as follows: You should know if the tank will hold AT LEAST six gallons. So add one pint of oil and add six gallons. If you know it will hold 12 gallons add a quart and then add the fuel. As you approach the full point add 1/2 pint and then add three gallons. The gauge should tell you when you are near full. If you add 1/2 pint and only get in two gallons the engine won't care.

You better check your plugs.

Re: A little math problem...help...

If you have a gas gage on the dash and a built in tank forget all the math & gas station stuff. Look for a data plate on the tank. It is usually near the sending unit for the gas gage. The data plate will have the capacity stamped on it.
