I don't know about the flatbottom turbines some of you guys have in your parts, but out west the Hemi's and BBC's are still king of the hill. :)

The turbines are very rare & far between-I'm thinking of Unlimited Offshore Racing boats(Miss Budwiser) My hat is off to all drag boat racers!

Re: Flat bottom

Any idea how fast they were going? Good thing the lake was flat w/o any wind, or they might have flipped.

On the bays in NJ they race Garveys. Garveys (for those who don't know) are the native boat developed for the shallow Barnegat Bay in NJ. They are esentially flat bottom rowboats, sorta like Jon boats, but made of wood and large. When they race 'em they drop in big block motors w/ direct drive inboard props. I do not know how fast they go, but when they race, I expect to see them flip over at any second, especially upon completing a turn. Much scarier that the video. A lot of folks anchor their boats at the exit of a turn, to watch the races. That would seem to be the best place to join any crashes with your boat.

The turbine boat runs 110 at the drag races. Not fast comparitively speaking in the world of dragboats.

Here's a champion dragboat "driver" trying to figure out how to handle a flatbottom "circle boat". This boat can run 140+. This video shows how hard it is to keep the boats in the water.

Cool video. Again good thing the water is pretty calm. What is the spray exiting the hull on the driver's side? It seems to be only on the one side?

It's the water leaving the boat after finishing it's job cooling the engine, engine oil, and v-drive.:)

Ya, the water is calm because this isn't a race. The driver is only trying to tame the beast and learn the boat's quirks. Thanks for the good word!

Re: Flat bottom

That's a real cool boat.

As for the turbine one first posted, I'm assuming it's connected to some kind of transmission and so is prop drive? And that skinny pipe running the along the top of the exhaust looked like some kind of fuel delivery system to enable an after burner effect?

Yes sir, that is correct. Both boats are infact utilizing v-drive gear boxes and ultimately a propeller for propulsion. I think the skinny pipe is just for the "fire show" as you've stated. :)
