A new motor

Hello all, I am new here and am very thankful for finding this place for sure. I have a honest question for any that take the time to answer. If you were gonna buy yourself your last brand new store baught 25 hp, rope start, steering wheeled outboard for your 14'lowes flatbottom boat that you use in fresh water only, not doing alot of trolling or high speed pursoot eather just gettin from here ta yander what would you get? This is just an honest question, just looking for honest opinions from you folks that know or have forgoten more about outboards than I ever will. Thanks to all.

Re: A new motor

i have a 2000 Mercury 25 horse 2-stroke and its been a pleasure. I use for fishing, shuttling from landing to sand bar on the river and to get to my deer camp in the winter time. Its on a 14 foot MonArk flat bottom and it pushes the boat just fine.

Most any of the 25 horse 2-strokes are good reliable engines. I ran a Johnson 25 horse for years and it was as good a engine as this Merc is. Only reason i got rid of it was it was getting a good bit of age on it and I got this Merc for a real deal. Everyone has their opinions of the different brands.

Re: A new motor

Hi,

If you forget the price difference between 25 hp outboards for a moment:

If the new Mercury 25 EFI was out on the market I would for sure have a look at that. Rather light and the only EFI 25 hp today. Can't get more modern 25 hp, assuming it does not have any problem not discovered yet since it is basically a "new" unproven model as far as I know.
Link

Yamaha 25 hp 4-stroke would be another strong candidate also if You would prefer 4-stroke.
It is not that heavy but it has carburators.
Link

If You have no environmental restrictions in the lake(s) You will use the outboard You can not go wrong with an old technology 2-stroke carburator 25 hp - Mercury, Yamaha for example. After 2006 You can not buy a new 2-stroke carburator outboard because environmental regulations.

Yamaha 25 2-stroke would probably be high on my list of 2-stroke outboards to consider.
Link

Mercury no longer advertise their 2-stroke outboards on their website, but You can of course buy one at a Mercury dealer.

Just visit the manufacturer websites for more info. Remember if You need a short or long shaft outboard for Your boat.
Also remember if weight is a factor for Your boat that a 2-stroke is lighter then a 4-stroke in this class.

If You are on tight budget but still want to buy a new outboard You should probably select an old reliable 2-stroke with carburators. They are also easier to service if You prefer to do that Yourself (compared to 4-strokes). Yamaha 25 2-stroke would probably be my first choice then.

You may want to read this to understand why Yamaha outboards has a rather good reputation:
Link

I use Yamaha myself, a F115 4-stroke. Works fine.
But I would not have any problem using a Mercury, Suzuki or any other make if I would think they had an outboard for my needs.

If You plan to not do the service yourself make sure that You buy an outboard make that has a service center near You.

Good luck.

Re: A new motor

Thank you fellas, good reading and I appreciate it.I am totaly color blind when it comes to outboards, But money is hard ta come buy and I must spend wisely. I guess I want the ultamit motor whatever that is. :p If only there was a JOHN DEERE or TOYOTA my decision would be much easer! :D I guess to be on the safe side a fella probubly would be smart going 4 stroke the way things are a changing most everywhere. I think I will keep on getting an education here and make a decision next spring.Darn imformative place here very thankful I tripped across it. Thanks for the links BO.

kerr - Give a look see at the dealers in your area. A good dealer can be more important than the brand of engine.

SoLittle speaks the truth....Make sure the dealer you purchase from has a good reliable service department and that they stand behind what they sell. Whatever brand you decide to purchase...if the dealer wont stand behind it...it aint worth spit.
