So,

I had just finished up a 73 Johnson 6 hp for a friend today when a young 'fella brought in an 02 15 hp Merc 4strk. What a HOOT! Do you think it needs a carb kit?!

This is going to be a fun one! Obviously the neighbors realize I'm a sucker to fix the unfixable..LOL.. Any speculation on what the heck these deposits are?

So looks like a carb kit, fuel filter, fuel pump, and may as well change the oil and filter...

Can't wait to pick up some carb cleaner in the AM!

uh oh.... looks like the little nipper is going to have come up with the 192.63 for a new carb. I broke it all down, but the seat that the jet sits in was basically welded in the closed position, she self destructed when I "pried" the needle out...looks like it'll need Merc part number 835382T04.

Other than that and maybe a new fuel filter and a silencer for 11.12 it should be a runner.

Oh well, we'll see what his parents say! Looks like these carbs have come down in price.

Looks like it's been dropped in salt water. Wouldn't surprise me if it wasn't a Sailboat kicker that somebody forgot to tighten down when mounting.

I would strip it down and soak it CLR For starts.
Than a rebuild kit.

I stripped the carb all the way down and have left it to soak all night in the gallon carb cleaner can. I am amazed in the pitting in the interior of it though. I'll try again on the low speed jet seat in the AM but it looks like someone has taken needle nose pliers to it or it's just disintegrated partially from.. what? dissimiliar? galvanic? Not really sure. I swear it looks like the base of the carb has intergranular corrosion in it.

I'm really thinking that if this is going to be for a young boy's skiff, I should just R&R (remove and replace) the entire carb.

We'll see.

I'm thinking before you sink any money into that engine you should check other places for galvanic corrosion. Getting GC inside carberator is no small feat. What you could have there is a money pit.

True pull the spark plugs and see what it looks like.
It is hard to diagnose anything, without seeing it up close.

Can't help to suggest this, but if it taste salty, it probably was dropped in salt water.
