a newbie question

hello to all!

well, i did it-bought a boat-it`s a 2001 vip 18 footer bowrider-(viva)
inboard outboard-3.0 mercruiser-trying to get used to this whole i/o mind set-
I`m used to outboards. kinda leery of the blower situation--do i just run the blower all the time? dont know if i will always remember to flip the blower on everytime i drop below cruising speed---any advice out there?

Welcome to the VIP forum Rocky! Sorry I don't know much about I/O motors, or blowers. (I am still getting used to my Johnson Sea Horse Outbd 50) Perhaps you should repost your question in another forum? Anyhow, Congrads on buying your VIP, and welcome to the "club"!!

Although most owner's manuals say to only run the blower before starting and during low speed operation, I've had several I/O powered boats and I always run the blower for a few minutes before starting and keep it running the entire time the engine is running regardless of speed. I also run it for a minute or so after shutting down. Remember to run the blower for 4 to 5 minutes after refuelling.

I have yet to replace a blower motor.

Oh, and congrats on the new boat! I almost bought a used 20' VIP instead of the Rinker but as I got into it, the VIP had quite the story attached to it! It was too good to be true!!

Run with what MVN say's . I just bought a 1988 VIP 1800 Vision 3.0 litre
Alpha 1 mercruiser outdrive . I too wondered about the blower . I was told to run it at below cruise speeds and before start up . When we test drove the boat the guy from the marina left in on the entire time . Won't hurt a thing ! It may actually keep the engine bay and motor a little cooler.
I am restoring our boat and have a lot of ideas on what to do so if intersted

hey folks,
but how does the air get into the engine compartment at cruising speed? I dont see any air scoops anywhere-
still not fully understanding this!

Howdy, and congrats on the VIP.On an I/o I think there are openings for air under the back seats and also vents on top used by the blower.I agree about leaving the blower on from start up,it will keep engine cooler too.

The biggest concern with the blower will be when sitting without airflow for a period of time. Before you start the engine run the blower for a few minutes to vent the engine bay. Once out on the water and running you can go either way. Even slow speeds will keep air circulating somewhat.
I say if you stop the motor ! Before you start it again run the blower for a few minutes and you should be good to go .
