There was an old man who was a friend of my neighbor at our camp. That old man would talk and talk and talk. If you saw him walking down to the dock you would lie prone as if in the military, or you'd jump behind a boat or crouch down in one, hoping he wouldn't see you because if he did, he simply wouldn't shut up. Nicest old man you ever met, just talked alot.<br /><br />Well a couple of years ago we notice that it's very quiet next door. Come to find out the old man, who was overweight and disabled simply by age, stood up, and went to sit down and had broken his seat off and fallen out of the little jon boat we used to watch him paddle out in.<br /><br />He never wore a lifejacket, and my father, a stickler for boat safety, always used to tell him he should wear it. He would always blow him off saying he didn't need it.<br /><br />The old man drowned not 150 feet from our dock in less than 8 feet of water. Now that dock next door went from hustle and bustle and rowdy and noisy with that old man, to "haven't seen anybody on it in 2 years."<br /><br />That boat was pulled up onto the bank and left there with the broken seat next to it. A strong reminder of what can happen when we ignore safety issues.<br /><br />Very sad. Guys, I know it's not "cool" to wear a lifejacket, but it's not cool to get drug up by the Wildlife Infisheries and placed in a body bag either. <br /><br />Wear your fuKing life jacket. :(

I remember when I was young, about all we had were those orange puffy bib thingys. Dang hard to look cool wearing one of those! Now we have a huge variety of functional, fashionable, and comfortable alternatives. It's gotten to a point like seat belts...the new ones are so convenient and effective, it's downright silly NOT to wear one. My kids are required to wear them by law, so I feel I should set an example at the very least. (Hot sunny days sometimes excluded. Okay, call me a hypocrite.)<br /><br />I'll bet Waterinthefuel would like an informal poll. Do you wear one or not? Why or why not?

Dittos to wearing the life jacket. I always wear mine when Im alone all the time, even when fishing! I dont think ! could get back into my boat if I fell out! Too fat! Ive known two people that would have been saved if they would have been wearing a life jacket!<br /><br />I wish they would make life vests longer though, I have a very nice and expensive vest and it feels too short!

Yes, I would like to start an informal poll. <br /><br />Do you wear your lifejacket? Why or why not?

Yes...Most of the time anyways. I got me one of those handy dandy inflatables so if I hit my head on the way over it may not do me any good though.

No. But the more I am a part of this forum, the more I realize I need to mend my ways and put the darned thing on.

Most the time I don't unless we head offshore and the weather doesn't look the best.<br />My kids always do.

not much fishing going on in my boat but nobody wakeboards or ski's without their vest.<br /><br />i broke a femur 2 years ago behind my boat, darn glad i had my vest on. i can see how even a great swimmer could go down, doesn't take but a few seconds to get water where it shouldn't go. then you could be in serious trouble.

Used to have mine handy but didn't wear it. I always made the kids wear theirs while underway. One day a couple of years ago my youngest child was out with me and was fussing about how the life jacket didn't fit well and since I didn't wear mine "why did she have to wear hers". I put mine on to end that argument and now I wear it whenever I am in the boat. I go out alone a lot so it makes good sense to have it on before you need it. Always wear life jackets while on the water. find one that fits well. I like the vest type.

Whenever under power the vest is on, and I never am on the water alone. Always at least two in the boat. I've had two friends drown in two seperate incidents within the last 5 years. Vests would have saved them both, and they were both excellent swimmers.

Remember that fishing boat that capsized at the Columbia River Bar last year? All of the survivors had life vests on. No one who didn't survived.<br /><br />Kids are required to wear them by the "Law of the Dad" on my boat, and I find the only way to get guests to wear them is for me to put one on myself!<br /><br />Jinx

I don't swim and used to go offshore a couple of times a month with friends. I never gave it a thought. Looking back it was pretty stupid. LF gave me an inflatable for my birthday a few years ago and I never get underway in any boat without wearing it now. It also helps when kids are on the boat. They don't complain about theirs if an adult is also wearing one.

I spend most of my time on a river where the water is shallow.. only one end of the river is deep.. I generally don't wear one, but any kids on the boat do.. and I don't go out without another adult..<br />I hope to get one of the newer types that is more like a jacket, and then I'll wear it most of the time. (plus I plan to venture off shore at some stage.)<br /><br />regards<br /><br />Franki

Re: A not so funny screw up...

When I'm by myself I wear it at all times. I can swim, but not very well.<br />If I got pushed off a dock I could swim back, or I can jump of a ancored boat and swim back. I fear having to swim any distance to get back in the boat, that why I wear it. When I'm on larger boats I don't wear one, but I should.

It's an auto-inflater for me. Don't even know ya' have it on. I can swim and could probably save myself, but if I had to drag somebody, I don't know. So, it goes on before the motor is started and comes off when the mooring cover goes on. Just makes good sense to wear one.

The hubby wears an auto inflatable. It works good unless your wife pokes holes in it. You should check it every once in awhile. :D ;)

Wear mine anytime the main engine is running, along with the kill switch. If someone with me won't wear his, then I am fishing by myself. Take it off when fishing unless the water is rough. My kids are not allowed within 100 yard of a lake without a lifevest on.

Wife says as long as I keep life insurance premiums paid up dont worry about it. She will<br />give the boat to her new boyfriend.
