A prop misdeed... Question

Hello folks...

I have a question for any of you. But first of all I am already thoroughly humiliated over what I did so take it easy on me. Last week I wrecked the prop on my 40 HP Mariner on a stump so when I got home I swapped it with the original prop that had been on for years but I changed when I bought a spiffy after market prop.

During the changing I was distracted about 20 times and well to say the least I did not double check my work I simply tightend the castle nut and put the cotter pin on spun it with my hand and all was fine...

Well today I went to the lake and it was running great, however, all of a sudden at top speed I heard this horrible screeching sound and than it stopped I wondered in amazement and headed back to the dock and it started again.

Well to make a long story short I forgot to put the torque washer on and well I neatly ground a total of about 1/4 of an inch the lower unit housing and the shirt of the prop. So there is now with the torque washer on there is a 3/8 inch gap between the prop and the lower unit housing.

Everything is fine except for the gap where over and under-lapping skirts meet, if I put my after market prop on there is no gap but it is missing a blade and is going to be sent in to get fixed.

Will using it with a gap ruin anything? Does it matter if some exhaust goes out that way instead of all out the back of the prop. I don't think water will go in there due to the torpedo shape of the lower unit but I may be wrong and that is what I am asking you guys here on the forum.

Any help will be appreciated...

Being that his is 2 days old, I thought I'd add input to pump it up the list again.

Seems you'll have exhaust coming out instead of through the prop. Performance will likely drop as the exhaust stream will cause cavitation.

Just my .02, smarter folks will respond soon ;-)

Thanks for the input Rob, that is what I thought, but I seldom go faster then 20 mph, I just do not want to harm the engine and it does not seem like I will. Also I have seen some props ported where the prop begins, while this is nothing like it I am willing to lose some performace unitl I get my Michingan Wheel prop back which does meet the lower unit housing.

Also as I said before there was always a small gap maybe 1/16 or 1/8 so it was never sealed in the first place.

Thanks again for your input.

Thanks for responding Bond-o

How will I know if it "ventilates"? I know what you mean I really trashed it I have had this boat and engine since 1984 and it really bothers me that I let this happen.

lol you will know if it vents because it will be as if someone depressed the clutch when your trying to go, engine revs wildly without additional fwd motion.

this may sound crazy.... but can you find something else that will take up the space? like an aluminum can skin..... or something like that, that is if it vents too badly, just a thought.

Re: A prop misdeed... Question

Thanks for the response, if that is the case and it ventilates excessively, I can machine an aluminum sleeve on my Bridgeport and pressure slip it over the lower housing and put a few set screws for added security, I will put a gradual slope on the front to lessen the drag on the sleeve.

My wife has already said if it does not work it is time to get a new boat. She claims I got my money's worth after using it for nearly 28 years.

Thanks for the info guys as always you are a wealth of information.

Seems to me it is ventilating too much already... time to go shopping (for a replacement boat)!
