Dang right! Good marine techs are rare up here. Something to do with being layed-off for months at a time during the most expensive months of the year. $12 to $16/hr. I'll bet you can find a better paying welder job. I could start at $18 doing factory maintenance. Maybe I'll look into it again after this season. I can't afford to do this too much longer. We'll see.

Mike,

Just curious. Are you a tech at the Tampa P&DC or one of the annexs? Do you know what APPS, UFSM1000, SPBS, TMS, or CSBCS stand for? or maybe the other guys, DBCS, AFSM100, etc.

sorry john, i work in the back of the gateway station. im a PTF SSA.

i sort the mail prior to the 3 daily dispatches so that when it goes out to the tampa p&dc, it all goes where it should.

it was just a suggestion. its more than a few dollars an hour than a starting tech in the marine industry, you get full benifits for your whole family from day 1, and you will never again get laid off, and if you can make it past your 90 days, you're golden!

I started at 26.50 w/full benifits after 90 days on texoma. The people they had hired to mow the area made more than 15/hr. most of the techs that have been there for more than 5 years are making close to 38/hr.
Our shop rate was 85/hr and had more to do than 11 techs could take care of...
The Yammy dealer down there was ofering 32.50 just for a rigger...
It's out there, ya just have to go find it.

Most people don't realize much about Kansas other than Tornados and Dorthy-N-Toto.
Until you've seen most of this state, it's just a joke to most...yet for those who love to fish, boat, hunt, etc...it's a paradise.
Due to my wifes profession, we are back in Kansas, but I miss Texas for the fact I lived 200yrds from a 90,000 acre impoundment.

I completely agree that people are needed in the trades. ALL trades, for that matter.

Our public education system has done this country a disservice by ignoring quality trade programs.

As mentioned above, it is also a societal issue.

Personally, I will pay big bucks for someone that knows what they are doing and I don't have BEG to actually talk to me and tell me what they are going to do, or what they did. I'm easy to get along with, just talk to me.

Also, for those tradespeople that come into my home. Here's a tip, it's not your business to comment on my home, family or what I do.

I think the marine repair industry is completely broken. There truly are experts out there like Don S., Dhadley, rodbolt and so many others that grace this board. But, I'll tell you, the industry better get organized and start rating yourself, or, the government will do it for you.

contact the folks at the Association of Marine Technicians (AMTECH)for help and information. It is a good organization and they are promoting professionalism in the industry.

www.am-tech.org/

Mechanic's pay varies around the country and at what type of dealership. It is not very high for an experienced and sharp tech, unless he is in business for himself.

check out the ads in the back of the marine industry trade magazines like Boat and Motor Dealer, Marine Industry, Soundings-Trade Only, etc.

Re: A question for all marine techs.......

I bill marinas I contract for at 45/hr and if I am running it through me its 75. if ya wanna get bumped to the top of the list its 150/hr so I can deal with getting beyatched at by the folks that got bumped.
in my are no one wants to pay more than about 15/hr and they get what they pay for. pay peanuts get monkeys.
most the stuff I see its only after a couple other techs got baffeled.
I dont do much 100 hour service stuff :) :) .
but if I get the work order I go get the tech that blew it and teach them what they missed, or I try to.
most will never be a tech and will always be a rigger or a 100 hour service mechanic.
I have been hollering for some industry regulation/license for years.
I am not amitech but the yamaha master tech test scared me.
I went into the breakroom when I was done and was worried they would never allow me to work on a yamaha again.

but I passed it :) :) .
got a shirt and 7 gold pacthes.
cost me out of pocket about 5 years and 5000 dollars.
but I got it.
anyone at any time can talk to me. I will do what I can to aid all. why ya think I spend so much time here.
other than a bit of sado-masichism on DC.
when I decided to get back into this when the navy booted me,they still pay though, I decided to be the best.
but most techs I run into have no drive and very low reading and reading comprehension skills. without it your sunk.
you will be the rigger/100 hr service tech.
teach yourself to read all the material not just the service manual and you can excell.
funny about the home thing.
I make no distinctions if they have a travel trailer and dog poop all over or a 3 million dollar home in martins point. I bill.you pay.
if the rig looks like junk I will asses the rig and tell ya.
nothing worse than rebuilding a set of carbs when the impeller is fried and the gearcase is full of water.
what I tell the dealers I contract for is this, its your dealership and my reputation. which one will suffer ?
its not uncommon for my customers to stand inside my front door hollering for me in bed at 5:30 in the morning. the decent ones allow me to make a pot of coffee the really good ones bring some.
the house has been here since 55 and the phone number since 63,
I have lived here full time since 94.
I have no qualms with coming home, pressure testing a beverage can, unplugging the phone and fireing up the stereo while my grill is hot.
so not all techs are out to rip ya off, most dont even know they are doing it.
I approach the job with the attitude its not my money but it is my reputation and if I try to save the customer 5 buxs and he paddles back he is not thinking, bless poor tom he tried to save me a buck. he is thinking I just had it there and paid and I am paddling. I am gonna whoop his butt.
and that is mostly the secret to how I do what I do and play when I want and give my horse a kiss now and again.

Re: A question for all marine techs.......

So...do most marina's pay on how much you can produce in a day or how much ya know about what ever the problem could be or how it works? Seems like where I am you have to be fASt At eVerYthing. I'm a little ticked off about that,I'd still rather do a job right at my pace and never see the boat again until something eles goes wrong or what ever the case. There is also a thing called quality work the first time. I posted a topic similair to this last fall.
Thanks y'all!

fast ang good are not always the same thing
labour rate of pay varies a lot between marinas
some pay by flat rate ie. how much you bill
others pay straight hours
in your area with your experience you should be around 15 - 20.00 hour
almost every marina is looking for qualified techs so look around

Florida rates run anywhere from $10 to $20 for hourly employees. Jobs by contract can run anywhere from 20% to 50% of the billed labor rate.
