I have a 1970 115 Evinrude and am rebuilding the carbs. The retainers for the starboard side needle valve screws are no longer available. can I use the port retainers? what if anything is different about them? Starboard and Port needle valves are both right hand threads and the openings for the retainers seem to be the same.

Also are the bearings for the needle valves only used on the port side as there are only two required according to the Evinrude site and they are only shown for the port side.

The difference is the "tightness" of the needle in the retainer. Two are looser to make the external linkage work better, that's all.

All four get a bearing. The parts list is showing two (per carburetor).

Re: A question for the Carb gurus

there is only one bearing in the new carb kit and it is a tight fit going into the screw threads in the carb body. There were not any bearings on the carbs when dissasembled, or at least i do not see any in the passage and there was none that came out on the needles.

When I check with RBJohnson they told me the retainers for starboard were no longer available I suppose the url Daviet listed is an aftermarket distributor which is fine. RBJ also said either could be used for either side. so I ordered additional retainers for the starboard side. I have also ordered additional bearings for the other needles.

Thanks for all your help
