Re: A Question of virginity???

The basic power trim kit was the same on all type 1 trims some required differant spacers and fasteners but I think the kit was interchangeable on all I/6 engines

Re: A Question of virginity???

Hey Laddies, I know PT from my 1250 would go on every thing up to my 1979 115, but the 1981 115 (which has PT) looks a little different. The motor bracket does not have the transom screws the older engines have, and the electrical harness from the shift/throttle control is different then the older motors which seem to be the same from a 1967 Thunderbolt SS (with the tacometer port in the front to the 1979 115 which has a similar control unit). I'll bet the Great Lakes area is plentiful with old fresh water kickers, as the salt water is so far away. Boy SCAATY is right this storm is dropping lots of water here. Thanks JR

Re: A Question of virginity???

James, I just double checked serial numbers and the parts manual says the type II trim started at 6436123 and that should be 1984 production, you may have a newer engine than you think or someone changed the transom brackets. But again it would not be the first print error that Mercury has made or for that matter me--Bob

Re: A Question of virginity???

Hi Laddies, Finally got some power here at the store last night, home is still w/o power since Thursday night, burrrrrr. I double checked the serial number on the port side of the block where the two pieces (crank case and head) bolt together and that number is the same as the motor bracket serial number, so the engine is a 1981 115. The power trim on the 1981, (twin hydrolic cylinders placed a little wider then the non PT shock absorbers which is similar to earlier models), looks like it would bolt up to the earlier models, (and the older PT unit looks like it should still bolt up to this engine as well). The electrical actuation controls would be different but easy to use the older three button type on the newer unit, and it looks like the newer electrical controls would fit the older PT units also. I'm not sure the difference between type I and II, but this looks similar to the earlier engines so it must be type I. I think this, (1981) is a 115 at the crank shaft, where I read somewhere the 1982 115 was prop rated, do you know if I am right about that guess? Thanks JR

Re: A Question of virginity???

James, sorry to hear about the power loss I thought we lucky people of N. Michigan were the only lucky ones. I believe that Mercury switched to prop shaft HP in 1978 or 79as that was the end of 150 HP I/6s. The differance in type I trim (cyls on the outside of the brackets) and type II cyls on the inside of the transom brackets) the dash panel trim controls and the shift handle controls are a interchangeable as you thought. The hardware differances that I mentioned before are the spacers that are on the outside of the brackets and the long tie bolt on the bottom of brackets that go thru the bottom of the cyls. I don't think it hurts to use the newer longer ones on a older engine but don't know for sure, I pearonal would try it and keep my eye on it if it moved around I would shorten the spacers. Hope you get your power back soon, think what it would be if you had livestock to water--Good Luck--Bob

Re: A Question of virginity???

Hi Bob, (Laddies), Thanks for the good wishes, I hope I have power when I get home. My SELOC manual showes 1977 as the last year of the 1500 and 1500XS, in 1978 they offered the 900, 1150 and 1400 inline and the 1500 was a V6 121.9 cu inch. The 1979, 1980 and 1981 model years, called them 90, 115 and 140, and in 1982 there was only a 90 and a 115 inline, (no 140 and the 121.9 cu inch was the 150). I think the 140 at the crank was the 115 at the prop, so I would guess 1982 was when they rated the inline at the prop, (someone else stated this same thing, [that 1982 was the prop rated inline] on one of these informative posts as well). I know that the 1979 115 I have has a lot more snot out of the hole then a fresh 1976 1500 had, (both motors on the same boat), the 1500 had a faster top end, but it had PT and the 115 does not. I think I read a post that stated that the 115 had a better hole shot then the 150 inline. Of all the inlines I have run: the 1250 short shaft was the strongest out of the hole both on a fairly heavy boat and God help you when I had it on a 15' Carlson flat bottom tunnel hull, it would go 0-70 in very short order, (of course the hull was very light, was rated for an 85 horse engine and was scary when it was trimmed "on the edge"). I sold it with a 4cyl 650ss on it that ran out very well (North of 40 MPH). Thanks for the info JR

Re: A Question of virginity???

I just recently put a power trim assembly from a newer inline on my 69 1250. I put the entire assembly, transom clamp and all on. I had to remove the powerhead and lower unit to install it, but it was worth it. This setup has the newer transom assembly that does not have the clamps that are turned by hand. Instead, it uses four bolts through the transom. The whole thing was a complete bolt-on, and works perfectly.

I have heard a million different years for when the prop vs crank hp rating changed.

Re: A Question of virginity???

Lots of trees down, 5 days without power but I'm well prepared. Some neighbors either had there house or car in the right place at the wrong time, or the planting of some trees by Mother Nature who decided she didn't want them there anymore can into play. I was lucky. Now, about the mountain blowing up thing. 8)

On PT units, everyone I talked to are collecting them too.

Re: A Question of virginity???

Thanks SCAATY, RE: PT; that's what I thought. I'll probably have to buy a dead motor or junk boat with dead motor to find a factory unit at a reasonable price. I think the old 1968 unit I have is a treasure. Believe it or not: South Skagit County, (where my play property is), took a far bigger hit from that very cold storm out of the North that hit a week before this last big one. It is fairly rare you see a number of, (lots and lots of) previously healthy cedar and other types of trees literally snapped 3 to 5 feet up the trunk of the tree, (as opposed to tipping the root ball over, normally associated with 'wind falls'). The number of trees down were even greater then the 1962 Columbas day storm, (guess that dates me). This recent storm did not take any new ones down that I saw, (up there in South Skagit). Jason: Did you have to change the entire motor bracket and mid section, or was that an option you chose? It looked to me like the 1981 PT unit would bolt up to the earlier motor brackets like Laddies stated. Thanks for the info. JR

Re: A Question of virginity???

Jason: I am keeping my 1968 1250 short shaft for parts. I already robbed the electrical harness and some fuel lines, but I would not have any use for the three carbs, (which were never rebuilt and gave 36 years of great and dependable service). The block is intack, (nothing came through the side), and I think #3 has a hole, (but I don't plan to take it apart to look). It still turned over after detonating, and I olied it up, (so the internals could still be OK). The sheet metal looks very good as well. Let me know if you need something as Idaho isn't that far away. JR

Re: A Question of virginity???

Here is a pic of my trim assembly. I had to unbolt my old manual assembly from my midsection. I initially thought it would be a piece o' cake until I realized I would need to remove the powerhead to get to the upper bolts, and the lower unit to remove the parts that locked the motor to the old trim pin when in reverse. More than worth the work.

Yes, if your shroud looks good, I would be interested in that, my shrould looks like arse, the decals are all gouged up on one side.

Re: A Question of virginity???

Also, the guy I bought this unit from is out of the Seattle area, I found him in Craigslist, he sells a lot of outboard, I/O, and general boat parts. I got this assembly for $280 including shipping. It wasn't perfect, there was a bit of rust, and the overtrim switch was inoperable (I have to hold the trim and trailer button to trim out, but I'll rewire that), but as a whole, the unit works well, I was able to just install the thing and be done with it.

I like it because it has the four bolt locations as opposed to the older one with the doo-hickeys you turn on the clamp and the two lower bolts. I also like it because there are multiple holes so I can tweak the motor height.

Re: A Question of virginity???

Hey Jason, That PT looks the same from that angle as both my 1968 and 1981 PT units look. I don't know about the upper bolts, but maybe I will find out when I try to change it to the 1969 1000. I agree about the number of bolt holes and the fact that the PT units make the hold on the transom much wider, (and therefore: much better), then non PT. I will look carefully at the 1250 shroud and let you know when I get up to my property in a week or two. If mine meets your requirements maybe you can pay the freight to ship to you and I wouldn't mind using your old one to keep the old girl from the elements, (if a swap is practical: depends on the freight). I will let you know, but I think she looks pretty good, (from my memory). I was told by my 'go to' mechanic to watch the 5200 red line on the 1250 as they have lighter rods then the later 1350 1150 1400 1500s had. I bet I got 5000 + hours on that old girl before she laid down. She is the reason I love these old inlines. Thanks for the info. JR

Re: A Question of virginity???

5200 redline? Man, I tickle 6000 all the time. It just sounds happier when I keep it propped for that. Can't say I have ever heard of any inline 6 that didn't like 5800-6000, but what do I know...

Yeah, we could do a swap if that is something you would want to do. Mainly, I am looking for complete decaling, and a scratch here and there is fine, as long as it'll wax up. My alternative is to strip mine down and repaint it, and apply current style decals. I also toyed with stripping all the paint off of the entire outboard, polishing the aluminum, and clearcoating it, like I did on my Cannondale mountain bike, but that might be a little too crazy.

Also, if you could take a look at your top cover, I would appreciate it. I have a hole on mine that someone bondo'd, and I have never messed with it. I was plannning on sanding it, applying new filler. and painting it, but if I could just wx one up that would be nice...

Re: A Question of virginity???

Hey Jason, That is what I heard, (more then once from people who should know), and I kept her @ the 5200 factory redline most of the time, (when she was hot rodding around). One time in the mid 90's, when I had her on a very light, fast hull I ran her 5800-5900 to leave another inline 140 in the dust, (because I wasn't paying attention to the tach and just wanted to win). Nothing came loose, and it sounded OK and ran well for many more years, but I just felt I was lucky that I didn't grab any air. I am going to the property New Years eve so I will look very carefully at the sheet metal and the top cover of the 1250. I am fairly sure the top is nice, I think the insulation may have melted a little, (on the inside of the shroud), when my son ended the engine's carreer and some fuel torched the powerhead for a few minutes. (I found a PT that I plan to post a question on in a few minutes.) What town and zip code in Idaho, and I will check shipping costs? JR

Re: A Question of virginity???

Hey Jason, I walked up to UPS a few doors up from me and the shipping is about $20.00 each way. I'm fairly sure the top cover is in real good shape, the shroud may not be perfect, (but you may be able to take your insulation from the inside of your shroud and swap it to mine). I think the decals are OK and I know that the three cinch snaps are good. I will check it out carefully this coming weekend and if it meets your standards, we can figure out how to exchange contact info and I will ship it to you, if you agree to ship back your old ones, (I don't care about the insulation inside the shroud), we can call it even. I bought the engine in 1986 and it looked very nice with obviously very low hours 20 years ago, (never painted it either), so the black undoubtedly could use a little touch up. Is your face plate in good condition? JR

Yeah, my face plate is fine. I would need to use my insulation, although I have considered getting some Dynamat and installing that in the shroud and face plate to muffle things a bit.
