I agree Bubba.

That's the thing, if we all started posting things that "irritates" us, the Mods wouldn't be able to keep up with locking threads.....

Man...everyone is getting all bent out of shape here! I don't think anyone is suggesting that we implement a policing system, or that anyone is going to be going around and calling out those that spell incorrectly or have poor grammar. I think this is, or was, a thread to vent something that was on the OP's mind. There are others here that feel the same way. There are still others that do not. Fine. If this thread offends you, it's simple...don't read it. I also believe that no one will be criticizing an expert that is giving sound advice, for not using proper elementary English skills. Good advice is good advice, no matter how it is spelled, so Laddies (and others of his professional ilk) please do not let this deter you from posting up your hard earned wisdom.

People have differing levels of tolerance, and that level can change with what kind of day we are having. Most (and I stress MOST...NOT ALL) of the folks on here are quite tolerant of those with less than perfect typing skills. Even when something is said about poor grammar, it is usually in jest. I think we know which ones are being highlighted in the OP's remarks, and it can be frustrating to even try to read some of those posts. One has to wonder why they repeatedly fail to even try to clarify their meanings. Furthermore, his remarks were also aimed at classified ads...with which I agree wholeheartedly should contain proper grammar and spelling. One is not in a hurry to throw those ads on there, like one may be to post here, so one has plenty of time to proofread and correct for issues. I know that I, myself, personally, will be less inclined to even respond to a classified ad that is poorly constructed, not because I think I am superior in any way, but because it shows the seller's complete disregard for taking the time to do something right, which in my extensive automotive experience, translates directly to how he maintains the vehicle or item being advertised.

I thought this was a boating forum not a english class but apparently we poor under educated white trash offend our highly educated elite members. I have had my grammar corrected on occasion by our intellectual members, I don't recall ever claiming to be a typist, grammar student or intellectual (those educated beyond their intelligence level). Personally I am just a under educated person who worked as a mechanic 50+ years of my life and use to spend many hours a day on this forum helping people with mechanical problems but in the last couple of years the forum has been taken over by the likes of you folks, I have never been criticised by anyone that I have helped only by the people of your mentality, with your high handed a attitude and hurtful remarks, at 71 years of age they kind of run off my back but there are many more young members that could and would give advice but for some of the attitude shown in this thread.

I couldn't have said it better! Whats worse bad grammar or hurting someone you don't even know that needs help or is offering help?

A truly well educated person would never try to be little someone for their perceived education level IN MY NOT SO HUMBLE OPINION

I will disagree with you on this since I work with extremely well educated people daily that don't take proper care of their cars, boats, house etc etc. While on the other side of the coin I have dealt with people with less formal education that couldn't write a proper sentence if their life depended on it that take extreme pride in taking care of their property.

Also some are like me just can't type & didn't do well in English Grammar while still in school.

My own mother was a GENIUS but didn't have an ounce of common sense which is unfortunately part of the reason she died at a young age with multiple college degrees.

Feel free to disagree. That is why I am where I am...to ensure you keep that freedom. That is why I stated "I, myself, personally" because I know that not everyone will agree. Also, that is not to say that I will simply discount the ad entirely (just I would be more inclined to do so), or that ALL people are in those nice, neat little stereotypes. Some people do the best they can with what they have, and I respect that. Some are just lazy, and say "ahhh...that's good enough". Some are simply dyslexic, or have trouble typing. You can usually tell the difference. And yes, those people can be in any socio-economic category. I think the OP was aiming at this group (lazy, and say "ahhh...that's good enough") when he posted this thread. I know I was. My own grandad is the world's worst at misspelling, mixing up words, etc, but I respect him more than any other man on this earth. He has forgotten more about repairing things than I will ever know. He is a retired Air Force veteran, and worked as an electrician for 42 years at a paper mill. His education was spotty, to say the least. BUT...lazy he is NOT, and he does the best he can with words. Yes, I rib him about it from time to time. Not in a snotty way, but just to let him know that his hard work that paid for my education was not wasted.

I think inflection gets lost in typing. Something that may be meant with humor, sarcasm, or in a "wink, wink...nod, nod" kind of way just doesn't come across on a screen like it does in person. Maybe we should all be a little more sensitive to that. I know on the flip side of this discussion, there are some very knowledgeable people here, but when certain ones share that knowledge, they do it in such a belittling or brash manner, that the knowledge gets lost. Intentional or not, that's the way it comes across.

Bubba...who ever said "common sense" was common at all? And I do agree with you for the most part, but there are some than can fix it, they simply choose not to...for whatever reason. Again, I think this was the group the OP had in mind.

100% Agree with this which is why I always try to take in to account text has no feeling or absolute meaning behind it.

Also just so you understand if the meaning of my text was misunderstood I disagreed with the way I inter-pated what you wrote at the time. I just find too m,any of us judge people based on how they talk, perceived education level, appearance, the list goes on & on & on...........

Also I actually have run boards & been a mod at all levels but overall haven't seen this one to be any thing close to as bad on picking on people as some others I frequent. This is also my most visited boat board at this time.

Not to belittle you, but in your sentence, belittle should be one word not two.

Re: A simple thing that irritates me in the online world

This thread has made a shambles of the notion of conducting discussions with courtesy and without personal insults.

I got into that and had second thoughts, realizing that I was being sucked into a bar fight.

We don't do that here.
