Re: A Starcraft video

What does "omc v-8 lower unit" in the description mean? Higher gear ratio lower unit?

Because the outboard was a OMC Seadrive Originally , It was set up a little differently . Instead of just being the standard 2.5l 150 hp block it is a 2.5l 155 hp "commercial"(very subtle differences) block. Also instead of the traditional 1.86r of the v6's it has a ratio closer to 1.51ish.

Re: A Starcraft video

I listed it as a 150 due to the fact that I didn't want to explain that it was a Omc sea drive unit that I converted to a regular outboard and for the Sea drives omc lowered the compression slightly and changed the timing in order for it to run the v8 lower gearcase (which is about 1.51 ratio compared to the regular v6 gear case that is typically 1.86). You see this is a 25'' inch shaft instead f a 20'' , all these changes allow for less gas consumption at higher speeds giving extended fishing trips. So after all these changes omc called it the 2.5l 155hp comercial V6. I'm calling it a 175 because I swapped the reed valves and the carbs from a 175 with a bad piston that I had in the garage. I also swapped the flywheel , stator, voltage rectifier (not regulator) and the air silencer due to 6 air ports to suck from rather than 5. Seeing that the 175 was 5 years newer it was more or less an upgrade , much more efficent charging system. Luckily the carbs had just been rebuilt so the whole thing worked out. In the video these changes had not been done. That was the first day I had it in the water and you never get the best results the first time out. In fact most of my test runs involve a pattle and lots of cursing. Aside from that whether it looks it in the video or not it was still moving in the mid to upper 50's. It looks very different now and I plan on posting progress pics soon. I'm really not one to bull**** so I fully intend on posting a GPS on board video to silence the nay sayers , But it's all in good fun.

Well...

The heading on the video says 67mph. I think the guys around here were saying no way based on what they saw in the video. I suppose you are now confirming that it was actually mid 50's - so that would be a legit "nay say", right?

Man, nearly 70mph is just stinkin fast! So is mid 50's for that matter. I guess I am just a slow boater.

Welcome and cheers!

Welcome aboard. Best thing to do for pictures is to create a free account on photobucket.com and upload them there. Then just link to them from here.

BBB83....You'll fit right in over here in the Starcraft brotherhood aka the "Starmada"; Welcome! Someone here will be around to collect the dues shortly.

Friend of mine took me out in his bass boat and we hit 71mph. That was bat s*#t crazy fast. I wanted a seat belt because I felt like I was going to pop out of my seat. 50mph is fast enough for me but very happy with 35 on lakes around here as it gets rough.

Don't worry about grammer ect, we understand you and its just fine. Be yourself amoung friends.

Got a resto to start when the 3' of snow melts off my 18' 1974 Chieftain. I already have a small grocery list of chrome that needs fixing or replacing. Probably start a new thread on it soon. Maybe we can connect on a few things.

Well,

I am sure the hull won't limit you if you get enough RPM's x pitch - you'll push enough water - physics is physics. Speed is just RPM x Prop pitch minus a slip factor - if you can get 7000 rpm off your motor - you'll get 67.

http://www.rbbi.com/folders/prop/propcalc.htm

USE your calculator again and use 1.51 for the gear ratio, even up to .20 prop slip 5900 gets me there. not 7,000 or try this link http://continuouswave.com/cgi-bin/crouchcalc.pl There is no math that disproves my claims

OK, I'll pick up my buddy HA there and drive over to ya, have him get in your boat. I'll be only too happy to video from shore the 70mph run!

Wow, I don't know when I got to be such an old man. I used to drive 120mph on the highway and 75mph down my residential road.

Maybe it was when I had to pay $1200 for 6 months auto insurance (PLPD)? Maybe it was after all my traffic ticket and court costs?

Or, maybe it was when I figured out that I am actually not invincible and I actually do bleed (a lot). Or, maybe it's when I look at my three little ones and see that they need me.

I dunno but I am aok being an old man with those days behind me.

-------------------------------

Big block, I'm not sure what you were after with your cabin walls there but that is pretty cool! You have me thinking for a second on my project here, hmmmm.

Cheers buddy!:D

Re: A Starcraft video

The original fore walls had ben badly butchered over the years and the boat had a lot of hull wobble. The port hole is one giant brace. It has a very stout design and it goes with the name "Hole Shot". P.S. I'm still young and stupid so going fast is very appealing to me!

Yah, with that much fab work that hull and cabin have to be way solid. Looking forward to your progress man!

As far as spelling goes you can download ispell and use it. Grammer, can't help much with that. Practice I guess.
