I had a few unanswered questions, so i thought an interesting title would help
Anyhow..I bought a 57 johnson 5.5 in the spring for short money, and it was an awesome barn find. Runs like the day it was made, and looks good. A bit stiff, but im working that out. Then yesterday, i saw an ad in craigslist for 4 vintage outboard for 100 bucks. So, after spitting my coffee in my lap, i go to investigate. the motors were an old unknown blue evinrude 7.5, 56 johnson 15 (missing prop and misc parts.) and 2 56, and 57 7.5 johnsons. I ended up offering 40 bucks for both 7.5's and i rolled home with those 2. figured i could re-coup on the parts if they were junk. Had a chance to look em over today, and the 56 johnson had no compression due to missing head gasket. choke control is broken off the carb, and shift lever is missing. but it turns free, and the lower is mint. The 57..Frozen solid. Hit it with the mystery oil last night, and this morning, came home gave it a quick twist and she freed right up. so.. the 57 now has decent compression, albeit a bit low on the top, no scoring on the cyl.. just a small amount of rusty oil, and it's complete. Coils are junk though. so.. finally getting to my question, how compatable are the 57 and 56 7.5 motors with my 57 5.5? The lowers appear to be the same.I would like to think i stocked up on 2 parts motors for my 5.5, or if i part out the 56, i could put cash into paypal to buy coils and impellor for the 57 and have another runner. if the lowers are the same, i got 2 nice props, and 2 good shifting lowers for it, and 1 if not 2 powerheads. If not. Off to fleabay they go...Thanks in advance..
